FEBRUARY 17 - MARCH 3
____________________________________________

Showing No Mercy - Time Magazine, Feb 26, 2002
Time magazine reports on the bloody attack on a rural outpost, and indicates that as the growing
strength of Nepal's Maoist rebels. Time wonders if the Maoists now threaten the government..

insurgency .

Nepali regime steps up oppression of Maoists and civilians - World Socialist Web Site, Feb 23
Some sympathy for the Maoists. "King Gaynendra Bikram and Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deubas
Nepal Congress Party (NCP) government stepped up the repression after last weekends attack."
The word "repression" says it all.

41 Killed in Bus Accident in Nepal - AP, Feb 20
A sad accident in Nepal, which was given low coverage in international media filled with stories of
governement-maoist catfight. A bus veered off a highway at night and plunged 200 feet into a
river, killing at least 41
passengers, reports Yahoo News

Lone skier from Asia's kingdom of snowy peaks -Christian Science Monitor, Feb 22
Perhaps the only topic to be proud of, Jay indeed made a history and made us all proud by being
the first Nepali to be in Winter Olympics. He andMorley were the darling of the media throughout
the event.

Warning on Indian double-dealing over Nepal - Asia Times Online, Feb 21
"India extends its full support to Nepal in its efforts to restore peace and order in the country,"
said a statement released on Monday by its embassy in Kathmandu. The statement came in the
wake of the latest Maoist attacks. But the title speaks more.

Nepal's king appeals for unity - BBC, Feb 19
BBC, which has always been in love with Nepal's monarchy, perhaps bored by its own, talks about
King Gyanendra appealing for unity. BBC should find a better headline. We all are appealing for
unity. What unity?

Nepal is not a place for spending a vacation now - Pravda.ru, Feb 18
Our personal favorite. Same reports as in other media sources with a spicy title. Great job from the
Russians. Nepal World News likes this article. Read it.

Maoist Offensive in Nepal - Radio Netherlands, Feb 18
Radio netherlands says that the attacks were the deadliest by the rebels since they launched their
struggle to overthrow Nepal's constitutional monarchy six years ago. Didnt CNN say the exact words
too? We are to hear the same lines repeatedly in almost all international media over the next
week.

Maoist rebels launch attack in Nepal - CNN, Feb 17
"More than 120 police and soldiers have been killed in a battle with Nepalese rebels," reports CNN
on the Achham incident. The attack is to start a " dog - cat fight" in Nepal resulting in more killings
and increasing body count over the weeks, still going up. Who is the Dog And, who is the Cat?

THE EDITOR RAMBLES:

These are the ten picks of Nepal World News on features on Nepal in international media last two
weeks. There wasnt much to be proud of, except for the Jay Khadka part. It was Maoists first, then
Royal Massacre, and Subash Gurung. Now its the maoists again, as the darlings of the media. Is it
the "Mao" tag and "communist romanticism" or does the world really care a lot about our country.
We sincerely hope
that its the latter.

So, what else is new in Nepal and in the world now? We hear that Bono of U2 is out to do in real life
what Bond has been doing in reel life, ie save the world. "I am Bono, Mr Bono." Doesnt sound that
bad. We think his real name is Paul something. And yeah, our reputed author Aditya Man Shrestha
is out with a new book on Royal massacre. Looking at his previous works, this should be
something worth reading. Poonam Singh, student and female singer rocks the
main page of Nepal World News this week. India Arie walks away empty handed in Grammy Awards
despite seven nominations. Alicia keys cant help the wicked smile. Kidding. We love keys. In our
neighboring country India, its the return of the militant Hindus, and with it all the "crab with p at
the end" that goes on in the name of religion and God. We are just praying that the effect doesnt
spill over to Nepal. No, Thank You Mr/Ms India. We got enough problems of our own for now.

That basically should sum it up. Whats the conclusion? There never is any conclusion. If there ever
was, it would be that Bono should continue trying to save this world, but would have to take care
not to come around the South Asian region for the time being in case he gets caught between
maoists and Nepalese government, And not to forget the militant Hindus in India. Or else that
would give Our Aditya another topic to write a book on. And if ever a movie is made on it, maybe
our Rock singer Poonam can compose a Grammy winning soundtrack for it.

WHAT ???

If you are thinking that, please disregard this part of editor's ramblings. For he does indeed
rambles, and that also incoherently sometimes. I would suggest you to hit the back browser and
continue surfing on other better parts of the Nepal World news site.

Thank You.

Farewell Note from the editor,

"Lights in Nepal are burning dim.
Mao's own ghosts are scaring him."

Lets pray for the better.

Warm Regards,

Editor In Chief,
