Most schools remained closed in the capital Monday in response call by a Maoist student wing to shut down educational institutions for two days. Schools put up notices announcing the closure.
Maoists called the strike to show their presence in the capital despite the extension of a national emergency by parliament for another three months last month. Most establishments closed down fearing violence.
Rebel student sympathizers last week vandalized two schools and injured a student activist loyalist of the ruling Nepali Congress party in an attack in the capital ahead of the school closure Monday.
