From time to time we are curious to know the number of Nepalis living in the United States. Well, here is the latest official statistics: As reported by the U.S. Bureau of the Census, the number of Nepalis living in the United States was between (at least) 7,858 and (at most) 9,399 persons on April 1, 2000. This information is based on the race question asked of everyone (short-form, 100%). Note: - 7,858 persons reporting Nepali/Nepalese as a single race; and - 9,399 persons reporting Nepali/Nepalese as a single race OR in combination with other race/s(e.g. Nepali and Asian Indian, Nepali and White etc. - without preference). Usually the census undercounts the population. But we don't know the magnitude of this problem. For more information and future updates, please go to http://www.geocities.com/nepaloregon/ As I had reported elsewhere, the 1990 Census showed about 3,200 Nepalis in the U.S. I will try to follow up on this as more data become available. Namaste! Kanhaiya Vaidya

Thanks, Kanhaiya. Frankly, I'd be shocked if the numbers are actually that low, even though they don't account for illegals. Speaking of which, I wonder what percentage of Nepalis--by visa type--currently in the United States are there illegally. For good measure, I also wonder the same for foreigners in Nepal. Anyhow, I think it'd be a great resource if someone had the time, energy, and inclination to create and maintain a directory of Nepalis in USA and Canada.

Kanhaiya Dai, thx for bringing out this info. I think one of the thing we could do is to contact the Nepali Associations around the US and get the count of legal and illegal Nepalis living in the US. It will be a great data to have.

HI all, This game is as easy as a game can ever be... Thought it would work out well for all Nepali Daju and Bhai Out there .... Simple rules of the game.... Remember all those nepali people you know in US...anywhere...and also write out the possible place they are stayig at right now. This way..aas each oce writes the name of the nepali guy or gal who are in US, we'll be able to decide how many people are in US and keep a good tract of nepalese here. Okay...let's start this game... One who starts first is the king of the game...and the last one ...hehe....u name it. Good luck all! love, uhi XENA

Kanhaiya, I was speaking with a colleague yesterday who recently met one of the reknowned Dixit's (Nepal's, not Bharat's). I told the colleague about the figures you provided, and he was as incredulous as I. According to him, Dixit stated figures around 50-60,000. I've heard similar numbers as well. What accounts for this discrepancy of ~40,000 Nepalis?

Krishnaji: I am just curious what the Dixits have to do with the census of Nepali in USA? Are they also keeping this? Or did they have any (ongoing) research on Nepali diaspora?

Bishwo, I don't know what the Dixits have to do with the U.S. census and do not posit any such connection. I'm sure that, if you're really interested and have the time and energy, you could do the research necessary to answer your questions. Btw, please refer to me as "krishna," rather than "krishnaji." Thanks. doubleDOG, 24,269 falls significantly above and below the #s Kanhaiya and I posted, respectively. I don't think any one of the figures is accurate, though it's interesting that the discrepancy between them is five-digits, which I reckon is a large margin of error.

"goubleDOG", i agree; your point about the inaccuracy of the census is the very reason for my initial inquiry. "krishna" is fine by me, thanks.

Thanks for the interest in the count of Nepalis in America. It is indeed confusing. Here are a few explanations to help unravel it. The Census number I had reported is based on RACE question alone. The number will go up once ANCESTRY and PLACE_OF_DATA become available. Definitely there are more Nepalis than reported by the Bureau. How many more? We don't know and probably we will never know. The Census DOES count everyone living in the United States. Everyone means illegal aliens and students included. The count doesn't include temporary visitors. The Census report DOES NOT include those persons who, for whatever reason, did not return the census forms or did not answer the census takers visiting the homes of non-respondents. Additionally, some people were missed in the census because the Master Address File wasn't complete and wasn’t updated later. I have heard of 50-60,000 Nepalis in 2001/2002. In my opinion, it is way over-guestimate. Whatever we think the right number is, the OFFICIAL number always be what the Census Bureau reports. Overall, the estimated net undercount of population in the 2000 Census was 1.2 percent. The undercount rate among Asians was 0.96 percent. Typically, young, undocumented aliens, persons living in rental units have a higher undercount rate. But I cannot imagine this being several hundred percent for Nepalis. Hope it helps to clear up some of the issues. I like to see higher number of Nepalis in Amrika. Afterall, there is strength in number and our community's clout in larger society depends upon the size (and wealth!) of our members. I will post about naturalized Americans from Nepal in a different thread. It is getting longer. Kanhaiya
