Today (Tuesday) is Maahaa Shiva Raatri. The Pashupati area, with clean (and I mean, really clean) waters of Bagmati, is packed with people. The authorities expected to bring in 400,000 pilgrims from across the southern border, but the number seems much lower than that. Bagmati's waters are clean these days, in part because of a Water Treatemet Facility that has been constructed in Chabel. Thanks to initiatives taken by Bidur Poudel and others, it's refreshing to look at the "sanglo flowing paani" of the Bagmati. There is this huge musical extravaganza later on in Bhrikuti Mandap today, with many Nepali and non-Nepali bands playing rock and pop music (NOT bhajans, I think). And the Kathmandu Jazz Festival kicks off at the Gokarna Golf Club this afternoon to bring the best of jazz to the cognoscenti. And at Kiratewsor Mahadev's Temple at Pashupati, famous Nepali singers, inlcuding the unimitatble Fatte Man (the one who sang "yesto pani hoondo rai cha"), there's a non-stop all-night Eastern classical music sessions As that sex kitten Zeenat Aman once famously swayed to the tunes of: "Dawm Maro Dawm Hare Krishna Hare Raam" A very happy, hazy, euphoric, giddy Shiva Raatro to you all oohi ashu ktm, nepal

Shiva Raatri reminded my own moments of hallucination. Thanks to the weedy halluva, Shiva Raatri becomes a memorable festival for almost everybody. The charm and the carefree moments of Shivaraatri are so irresistible! It is a beautiful irony that people still 'enjoy' in Kathmandu. Any way, who cares about the ambushes and hanging bomb? As long as you have a reefer to puff and the whole chaos around you to forget difficult reality, you are likely to hum in the tune of "Saannaniko Gaalaimaa , Kaalo Kothi raichha, Najar nai tirmir garaaune (Phattemaan)" , "Jaya Jaya Shiva Shankar, Kaataa Lage na kankar Pyaalaa tere naam kaa piyaa(Asha Bhosle)".. Enjoy.
