Five policemen killed as Maoists target Speaker KOL Report KATHMANDU, March 13 - Speaker Taranath Ranabhat had a narrow escape on his life after Maoist insurgents ambushed a convoy carrying him and Minister of State for Health Mohan Bahadur Basnet near Sangha VDC in Sindhupalchowk district, about 80 kilometres from here. The landmine explosion killed at least five policemen. Reports reaching Kathmandu said the Speaker Ranabhat and Minister Basnet was on their way to Sangha VDC to attend a function when one of the vehicles in the convoy hit a landmine planted by the Maoists at around 7 a.m. Wednesday morning. The blast killed at least five policemen instantly and wounded several others. Condition of three of them is reported to be serious. They have been airlifted to Kathmandu for treatment. Both the Speaker and Minister Basnet are reported to be unharmed in the incident. More details are expected. (rk)
