My relatives are coming from Nepal soon, so I'm curious to know what Nepali movies some of the Sajha visitors (especially the sensible ones--Biswo, NK, Ashu, Sunakhari, Anepalikt, BP, and so on) have enjoyed. I'm not really trying to find "good" movies, as in "movies that could be in a film festival." I'm just thinking about fun, entertaining flicks for older people to pass the time with--Karodpati, stuff like that. Any suggestions?
Suna Posted on 15-Mar-02 09:47 AM

Sally
I think if you can get the following movies on cassettes or DVDs would be great:

Man ko badh
Paral ko Ago
Kusumey Rumal

On another note: maybe its time to get in touch again (anepalikt's suggestion :)) soon.
Horizon Posted on 15-Mar-02 10:30 AM

I was going to suggest some movies and then I realize, Gee, suggestions sought from the " sensible " ones. Refrained, what if I am not a part of that " Brady Bunch". I guess I will have to specify my audience with my next posting :).
NK Posted on 15-Mar-02 10:34 AM

Now, now horizon, let's not get testy, shall we? :) :) :)

Sally, the only Nepali movies i have seen are Man ko badh, AAma, and that movie "ban fa phulyo phulai" cannot remember the name of the movie- I know when I watched these movies eons ago I had enjoyed it. Suna, really? you can rent these movies? Wow! But, Sally Good luck! How long are they going to stay? You might be running out the decent nepali movie as well as hindi movies from what I have see so far
:) And Stay Calm. ( i am in g'iving advice' mode today. somebody, press the reset button before i start giving advice to some another unuspecting soul)
sally Posted on 15-Mar-02 11:14 AM

Horizon, maybe you're among the "so on" :-) I didn't mean to offend anyone, but the way this site has been going lately, geez, I might get a list of who knows what.

"Brady Bunch," eh? But there are only 3 boys and 3 girls on my list. I need to add a Mr. and Mrs. Brady and Alice. Does San get to be Mr. Brady, or does have have to be Alice, cuz he cleans things up? Uhn-oh, maybe we better not go there.

Yeah, NK, I'm quite sure we'll run out of decent movies. But hey, I'm thinking strategically, and trying to find some kind of insurance that Zee TV won't become the background music of my life. I don't hate Hindi films or Indian TV shows; in fact, I really respect India for having such a vibrant alternative to Western media. But I'd rather see Nepali videos, if I have the choice.

Unfortunately I don't think Nepali videos are rentable; my relatives would pick them up in KTM, or I'd experiment with dhukuti.com, or something.

So Horizon, Arnico, etc., what are your favorites?
Horizon Posted on 15-Mar-02 11:35 AM

NKdi - Huncha I won't be testy :)

Sally - San might consider playing Mr. Brady if you can find a better Mrs. Brady :). Prem Pind is the only nepali movie I have seen. Another nepali movie I will promote all my life is - Chelibeti. You all should go and see it.

I thought "Bansuri" was good which I watched when I was 10.
Sindoor is the name of the movie with that song "banma fulyo fulei".
samjhana is good too.
Murari Posted on 15-Mar-02 12:28 PM

Sally Aunty,

Nepali movies Kati nai chan ra ? Don't you get tired of watching Bhuwan Kc's same
old "chyaantay boot" and Maha's old timer expired jokes over and over again. Have you given any thoughts on Hindi for a change ? The best of all, you don't even have to order the movies from Nepal. We are convenietly located in Sommerville Ave, right across from Market Baske for you service.Don't forget to
ask for "Khuwaa Baraf" cause that is our this week's special. Next weeK - Liril Saaban. Pretty cool, eh ?
arnico Posted on 15-Mar-02 12:34 PM

okay, I am one of the "so on" too... and this may just be my opinion... but

The absolute BEST Nepali movie I have EVER seen is Mukundo, directed by Tsering Ritar Sherpa. I saw it at a film festival in Nepal. I don't know if can be rented, but Sally, I would spend a few hours trying to find it, you won't regret it.
It is a tragic story of a jhankri (shaman) woman who falls in love with the husband of one of her patients. But it is filled with great humor and stunning views of back alleys and courtyards in Patan.

Kancho Posted on 15-Mar-02 01:16 PM

Basudev was pretty good too. Remember Madan Krishna's "Role # 101?"

The movie was based on a novel "Kattel sir ko chot patak," but the story on the movie is slightly different than the novel.
ashu Posted on 15-Mar-02 01:22 PM

Sally,

Tsering Ritar's English-subtitled "mukundo" (script written by Kesang Tseten, directed by Tsering, and produced by a Japanese production company) is
altogether a superb movie, and, I am afraid, way better than "karoadpati"
fare.

I don't think copies of "mukundo" are available, but I can ask Tsering, who is
a supporter of The Kathmandu Film Archive.

For straight professional-level advice, I'd recommend that you get in touch
with any one of these three people:

a) Prakash Thapa, -- a young FM-DJ whose knowledge, among others, of Nepali, Hindi, English movies is encyclopaedic. He is an excellent source to find out
about all kinds of Nepali movies.

b) Yadav Kharel, a commercial-film director who heads the Nepal Film Development Board. He or his staff would know which Nepali movies have come out in videos, DVDs, VCDs and so on. YK is an approachable guy.

c) Achuyt Koirala, a journalist at Kamana (film) magazine who covers Nepali
movies.

If you send me a short email, I'll send you their email addresses, and, you can use my name to get the needed info from them directly.

Happy viewing Nepali movies!!

Sally,
if your relatives are coming from Nepal, you should not exercise too much to get Nepali movies. Treat them with something different. What about taking them to I-Max theatre? My mom enjoyed it even though she does not understand english. If I'm not mistaken (reading your earlier posts), you're from DC metro area, right? So, take them to Space museum... i'm sure they will have fun! Also contact Sagarmatha TV in DC if you want to get copies of cultural programs of Ana, boston, new york, and more.
13-thum Posted on 15-Mar-02 02:22 PM

Though i have not seen any of these movies, i am sure that they are superb from the Nepalese movie standard (according to film review).

Biswo Posted on 15-Mar-02 03:09 PM

Sally:

"Saaino" is a good movie. I've not seen Mukundo, but I have heard it is a good
movie. I liked "Samjhanaa" very much. "Prempinda" as a whole is ok. Some of its
moments are very memorable. (Like the one when Nir Shah desperately tries to
woo Sunny Rauniyar by giving keys of his palace!) If you ask me the best Nepali
movie ever made, I will name Paraal Ko Aago! It is very loyal to its original story
written by Guru Prasad Mainali.
Shanti Posted on 15-Mar-02 10:14 PM

These are all old movies. What are good new nepali movies?

Sangey Posted on 16-Mar-02 12:11 PM

Yup yup, from what little experience I have with Nepali films, I can safely vouch for Saino and Samjhana. I was in my kukhure baisha when those films were big hits in Nepal and was quite smitten with the heroine (ironically, I can't recall her name now).

I don't think acting was any good, but stories were decent and the songs were excellent. I can still remember few dialogues... ha ha ha.

"...Hamro saino khacho ko saino. Malai tauko lukaune chat ko jarurat thiyo, waha lai kaam saghaune manche ko jarurat..."
suna Posted on 16-Mar-02 05:02 PM

Baaafrey Sangey,
That is a pretty powerful dialogue!
:)

I don't remember many dialogues but I do remember this one:

budha budhi ko jhagada paral ko ago.

I guess it means, chitto jalcha ani chitto selaucha :).

Hope this is true for most people. Mero chai raako balney bani cha. :)
Biswo Posted on 16-Mar-02 05:30 PM

Sangeyji:

Trupti Naadkar. She was actress in both Samjhana and Saaino.

Btw, what is the 'jhoorest' Nepali movie? Of course, there are many. But a high
profile one? ' Pirati'. This a billionth copy of '42nd Street' was so boring, and so
predictable that I didn't even bother to watch all of it. In retrospective, it actually
precipitated the boring movie making in Nepal! Now, you have a lot of movies that
are simply overusing the threadbare Hindi/Hollywood movie themes. That said, I
have a lot of hopes from new movie making generation. They, at least, talk of
creative movie making! May be one day they will really make something.
cardinal Posted on 16-Mar-02 06:17 PM

Hi Suna,

paral ko aago bhaneko bahira bata nadekhine tara bhitra bhitra sabai dadhera sakhaap banaune aago ho kyarey, as when applied to relationships, not something that starts and ends quickly as you said.
Homophobic Posted on 16-Mar-02 06:45 PM

How Movies get Degraded:

A Hollywood movie is made - Bollywood copies it (becomes a desi hit) - Kollywood tries to copy Bollywood (trying to duplicate the hit - gorkhali market). On the process, the latter 2 parties loose their originality and become another "wannabee." Nepali movies are highly unentertaining and nowadays most seem like another cheap 5th rate Hindi movie. Even the songs seem so dhoti like. Goddammit its so pathetic. Its not just limited to the movie, look at the actor/actress - both are third class looking gaule idiots.
rk Posted on 16-Mar-02 09:47 PM

I have samjhana and k ghar k dera with me. i watch them over and over never tired. try those.rk
suna Posted on 17-Mar-02 05:34 AM

cardinal
Thanks for the meaning of that, as you can see, I was guessing :).
K Posted on 17-Mar-02 10:47 AM

Nope. You were not guessing Suna. Your meaning is correct. The usual saying is "Logne swasni ko jhagada, paral ko aago'. Fight hard for a few moments/hours, then it is all over as soon as one says: Eh eta aaija_ta/aaunus_ta.

Most of the good Nepali movies mentioned here are not available on VHS or VCD - not even illegal copies. And those that are available in the market are not good at all. Instead of movies, I like Nepali music VCDs. Some of them are songs/dances from the movies (e.g. Geetanjali, Basanti Hawa, Audio Sound Geet Mala Part I, II, III) and others are songs/dances exclusively made for VCD/VHS (e.g. Best of Image, Drishya I, II etc)

Enjoy.
makuro Posted on 17-Mar-02 01:58 PM

Cardinal,
Paral ko agoo vaneko kunai dum(power) navako ago lai vanchan hoina ra just like Suna suggested initially? Tapai lae vaneko bahira nadekhine tara bitra bitra dankina ago ta vhuse ko agoo ho. Maile afnai goda poleko chu vhuse ko agoo ma tekera thinking there was no fire.
cardinal Posted on 17-Mar-02 04:07 PM

well, I may be wrong, but I always thought paral ko aago meant the fire which is ignited by even smallest of flames, keeps burning in the inside, seemingly innocent on outside, and shows its flames when it is too late -when everything is burnt inside. That is how I understand it, I may be wrong.
kanchhi Posted on 18-Mar-02 10:16 AM

I just bought and watched "Lobhi Papi". It's a very good movie. I think this movie is old too but our MAHA jodi have done awsome job.

Kanchhi
Paakhe Posted on 18-Mar-02 02:17 PM

I think K is right. Paral ko aago means that remains burning for a very short period of time. Bhus ko aago means the fire which we cannot see from outside, but is still burning inside. And as K said that, Logne swasni ko jhagada paral ko aago, means they fight for short time and there is a cease-fire.

Hey Sally,

How about the movie: Lahure, it has a feeling of a true Nepali being a "Lahure". Bir ko santan, sahid ko ragat lahure ko nishani.......

enjoy.

What is the best and the most reliable place to get Nepali movies? Are they good quality or are they of the type where you have to move your head up and down to keep up with the V-Hold ...?
Shanti Posted on 21-Mar-02 09:11 PM

So far Dhukuti.com is the only place that I could find vcds.

Kanchhi Posted on 22-Mar-02 01:31 PM

The quality is not like DVD that you rent from Blockbuster, but it's better than watching Hindi or Nepali pirated VHS movie.

We enjoyed them. Dulha Raja Dulhi Rani was good movie.
