Just received this e-mail from my University (CS dept. at George Mason University). Thought other Nepali graduate students and faculty may find it useful.. -PS ==== Dear Colleague: As you know, the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences offers awards for postdoctoral scientists and engineers at participating federal laboratories. These awards provide generous stipends (ranging from $34,000 - $61,000, depending on the laboratory), and the opportunity to conduct independent research in some of the best-equipped and staffed laboratories in the country. We want to ensure that a broad and diverse spectrum of graduate students is aware of these opportunities. Therefore, we are asking for your help in publicizing the program. Could you inform doctoral students in the sciences, engineering, and mathematics at your institution of these opportunities by copying this message to the graduate advisers and graduate students in your department? For detailed information and application materials, prospective applicants should visit the NRC Research Associateship Programs Web site at: http://www.national-academies.org/rap. Faculty may also be interested in the NRC Senior Associateship Programs, which include both sabbatical and summer faculty opportunities. There are two remaining application review cycles this year, with postmark deadline dates of April 15 and August 15. Applicants should begin a dialog with prospective Advisers at the laboratory as early as possible before the application deadline. Thank you for your assistance. Jane F. DellAmore Assistant to the Directors Associateship Programs National Research Council

yatri, I think, it depends on the requirements of the particular program that you are interested in. They seem to have provision for Non-US Citizens as well. Here is the information extracted from the Application instruction located at the following URL: http://www4.nationalacademies.org/pga/rap.nsf/WebDocuments/Application+Forms -PS ===== Special Visa Information for Non-U.S. Citizens Provide all requested information on citizenship and U.S. visa. When referring to the type of visa, use the terminology or symbols used by the U.S. Department of State, or U.S. Immigration Service, such as immigrant visa or exchange visitor (J-1) visa. If you receive an NRC Research Associateship award and are presently in the United States under a student (F-1) or temporary worker (H) visa, you must apply to the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) for a change of status. Before you begin tenure of your award, you must have an immigrant/permanent residence (P) or exchange visitor (J-1) visa. If you reside in the United States and have an immigrant visa (sometimes called a green card), you will be asked to furnish documentation. The NRC can provide you a Form IAP-66 (Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor Status) to enable you to apply for a change of status. This form will be sent to you upon your written request after you have received and accepted a NRC Research Associateship award. If you currently have a J-1 visa, please note that under U.S. laws there are strict limitations on the length of your stay as an exchange visitor. Because of this limitation of stay, the research award for which you will apply may be affected. You are required to submit copies of the following documents with your application package: - all U.S. visas stamped in your passport - the front and back sides of your I-94 card - your IAP-66, showing total length of time in the United States Because the NRC Research Associateship Program is supported by U.S. government funds, upon completing tenure you will be required to leave the United States and return to your home country for a minimum period of two years before you can apply for an immigrant (permanent residence) or temporary worker (H-1) visa.
