Hi all, Lynn Bennett's 1983 ko book "Dangerous Wives and Sacred Sisters: Social and Symbolic Roles of High-Caste [Hindu, Brahman-Chettri] Women in Nepal" has just been republished in Kathmandu by Mandala Book Point. I haven't had a chance to read it yet, but a quick skimming proves that the book's language is accessible to even non-anthropologists. Perhaps anthropologists among us who have read the book would like to share their perspectives, and help us understand how and why a Nepali high-caste Hindu woman is treated as a 'sacred sister' in her parents' home (maiti) and treated as a 'dangerous wife' in her husband's family (ghar) -- thereby making the issue of social construction of gender and women's role and perceptions a lot more complicated. If you want to order your copy, please contact good old Madhab Maharjan at Mandala at this email address: books@mos.com.np The book costs about Rs. 500 (paper) and Rs. 600 (hardcover) oohi ashu ktm, nepal
