Thanks Ashu for the link. I am still pondering on following quote cited in the article. Could this be true? Hope not.. == James wrote: "The work that leads to a doctor's degree is a constant temptation to sacrifice one's growth as a man to one's growth as a specialist."

The article gave a whole new perspective of getting Phd, specially in humanities. I agree that there are more Phd candidates than there has ever been. However, it is still very challenging to get the degree. Specifically in science fields, graduate students put several hours of work every week. I would say, at least 50-60 hours per week in the lab if not more.

From Tom & Ray's 1999 MIT Commencement Address: Tom: You have spent the last four, five or six years of your life working in the wrong direction. You are sliding down, as Tom Lehrer says, sliding down the razor blade of life. You are sliding down the happiness curve. You must stop this from happening and you must go in the other direction and we are here to help you. And, as you know, there is a process for reaching Nirvana and we are going to give it to you now. It is this: You must repeat the mantra. And the mantra happens to be emblazoned on our flag which stands here. None of you morons will be able to read it because it's in Latin. Ray: It says: "Non impediti ratione cogitatonus." Tom: Which, of course, means "unencumbered by the thought process." (laughter and applause) Now, I am going to give a very brief history of how this mantra has helped me. Ray: I can't wait. Tom: If you repeat this mantra, what happens is everything slows down. Life slows down. Being unencumbered by the thought process allows you to identify and hear and see defining moments in your life, things that will change your life. Unencumbered by the thought process. You say it over and over again. And everything slows down and begins to stop. We call these, by the way, moments of inertia. entire transcript is available at http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/tt/1999/jun09/speech.html

PhD is done to make oneself informed on the knowledges at the frontline of at least one field of study. Some people like to do this, fine, they are innovators. Some people wouldn't like it, fine, they are implementors. I love PhD, and yes, I would like to do at whatever cost!

It all depends on what ATTITUDE you have. If one thinks whatever he has is sufficient enough, and whoever he is is most smart ass, that person always advocates that I can do better without PHD. When Bacon says "Knowledge is Power" he is absulately right. The very idea to get PHD is to master the knowledge of unknowns. An Expert (which is not same as a Scientist) is less likely able to dymistify the unknown just working practically (or in a market). Unknowns should be verified emperically using mathematical, and statical means. A person who is interested to do this kind of job has always a quest for PHD.

In Nepal PhD matters. Not because that it carries a stock of useful knowledge, rather it AUTHORISES one to use "intelectually" threatening title "Dr.". The rent-creating potential of this magic "title" is so promosing that it is now the best candidate project for making investment by Nepalese "intelectual-enterprenuers". Here, I am listing some examples on how it works: 1. At Sajha Bus counter: When a passenger answer "my name is Dr. so and so", the cleark gives a quick glance, and without asking for seat preference, tells that "sir your seat is the second from the front, the best one". 2. In BIHE ko NIMTA card: The title "Dr." in front of bidegroom or bride's name is a "jewel in the crown". 3. For government officials, who cares the mark from work evaluation if one is blessed with "Dr.". 4. "Dr." is a handy tool (like a "dozer") to doze out ones competitor for political appointment. 5. "Dr." in front of columnist name puts lots of weight to otherwise weightless op-ed articles in news papers. 6. In seminar or conference, "Dr." helps to make a person in audience believe that "there must be something important in the presentation, may be is my inability to understand". 7...... I think, the list goes on! Neutral -------------------
