Ex-Kamaiyas evicted

Kathmandu, 4 February: 7000 former bonded labourers (Kamaiyas) were evicted from the land belonging to the Cotton Development Board (CDB) in Bardia district in west Nepal and their huts built over several hundred hectares torched. They are now without shelter at district headquarters in Guleriya. 70,000 Kamaiyas had been freed from bonded labour last year and the government had promised to provide them land as an alternative. Without alternatives, some of the destitute have returned to their former masters.

The Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) immediately protested the evictions and went on a door-to-door campaign to gather donations for the former bonded labourers in the capital Sunday. In a statement Saturday the main opposition also demanded the release of the party's Bardia district committee secretary Shyam Dhakal.

The government claims it started distributing small plots of land to the Kamaiyas for housing and agriculture after collecting data following their release from age-old serfdom through decree last year. A seven member parliamentary team headed by chairman of the National Assembly Social Justice Committee Jivan Prem Shrestha is on a field visit to the area to assess the situation.
