I got admission into Emory University MBA. Is doing MBA worth it? It is very costly, with no grant money. Or should I get more work experience and apply to Harvard in a few years. Any Nepali daju, didi at Harvard or otehr top MBA schools? How difficult is it to get in? Do they give $$$ships? Dhanyabad

Hi there,

From what I know (and current Nepali students at HBS can add to this) HBS is a very tough school to get into in any given year. But once you get in and get out
of HBS with that MBA degree, there's no denying that you can do really, really well (especially in Asia, as I am seeing of my friends who went to HBS) for yourself.

But it's really up to you to decide whether you want to pass up Emory's offer
now and wait to apply to HBS later.

Since you are already seriously thinkng about business school in general and have gotten into Emory, you can do an opportunity cost calculation and see what suits you and your particular goals in life.

As for money, Citibank, by the way, gives out loans to ALL needy HBS
students -- regardless of their citizenship and regardless of their credit
history.

That said, about HBS: Some people are also reapplicants to HBS, meaning they apply once or twice, don't get in, and maybe get in the third time around or
so -- AFTER getting feedbacks on their applications from the admissions committee. I have heard that HBS admissions commitee is good at providing feedbacks to rejected but feedback-seeking applicants.

But if you do wait for a few years and then apply to HBS, be sure to do these
two things:

a) on your applications, come across as a leader. HBS, being a school that aims
to produce general managers, loves those with demonstrated leadership stuff.

b) do really well on your admissions interview. HBS likes to see that you are articulate, smart and all that.

Of course, applying to any top school in the US comes down to how you honestly, credibly and vigorously can market, market and market yourself.

That's because at the of the day, all things being equal, applying to a top American school is all about 'selling' yourself -- and you have to come up with
your own 'unique selling proposition', so to speak, as to what makes you an
unique applicant who is different from 1000s of others and who would add something new and exciting to their incoming class.

Hope this helps.
Congrats on your admissions to Emory, and best wishes for your future.

Ashuji, it is very nice of you to write such a lengthy and good response. Have there been any of Nepalis at Harvard Business School. It must be quite an honor. What I am concerned about isthat I borrow all this money and my degree is not valuable. Emory is good school but not like Harvard. What are other good MBAs to think of applying.

Upadhay-ji,

The pleasure is all mine, to be sharing what LITTLE I know about HBS and
related matters. Doubtless, others will add their thoughts too.

That said, I would suggest that you visit, if you haven't done so already, the
B-school section of businessweek.com

That section contains resources you are likely to find very useful.

Whatever you decide to do with Emory's offer and so on, as a fellow Nepali I
wish you my very best for the kind of academic and professional success that keeps you happy, productive and fulfilled.

Hi there,

Congratulations !!!

Concerning question is that having MBA degree from US University is good because most of employers look the candidates who have MBA degree, but you must have a good hands on practice to be a manager in any company.

Well, it depends on you luck too.

I want you to know that the economic sufferings at this time. Federal government have announced that nation is in a severe recession. There are very limited jobs right now. Having whatever degree is not working at this moment. Majority companies are not sponsoring for H1 visas at this moment. It is difficult to have job right now. You are just going to start the MBA school. Hopefully, the economy will be recovered within next two years. It will be fine for you for looking job after MBA.

Regarding Harvard Bussiness School, it is really good one, but it is hard to get in, however it is not impossible at all. I know couple of Nepalese are getting MBA degree from HBS soon. They have an excellent back ground. The cost for MBA in Harvard is too much (I do not want to spell it out because you may get scared of it).

One thing, cheap education, low quality education. Think on it.

Good luck

Bostonian dherayee dhanyabad. Do you know of any Nepali student who is currently a student at Harvard. It would be nice to get his or her bichaar. You say many Nepali students are joining soon. Are they joining this year or wanting to apply. We should help each other out. Upadhaya

Upadhayaji, congratulations. I think you should go to Emory. It is a good school. Getting into Harvard and Wharton is extremely difficult (not that it cannot be done), but you should analyze your situation realistically. Just adding few more years doesn't necessarily make your chance better. What do you do? Quality is better than quantity. I don't thnk there are any Nepalis at Harvard or Wharton unless someone tells you otherwise. Whatever you decide, good luck to you.

As far as I know it is quite difficult to get job in US with MBA degree compare to other technical degrees. good luck

Re. Mr. Upadhya's query, as of today, I think 4 Nepalis have graduated from Harvard Business School: Roop Jyoti, Anup Joshi, A senior manager at the Asian Development Bank whose name escapes me right now, and Sushil Panta who just finished last year.

I know for sure a Nepali woman has just enrolled, and I heard there is also another woman in the same class (of 2003).

I can't give Sushil's email address here publicly without his consent, but if you send me an email by replying to this posting, I'll be happy to forward it to him.

There are 2 other graduate students and 3 undergraduates currently at Harvard, but HBS, I am told, is so distinct (in terms of governance, endowment, academic calendar) an academic entity within that university that for the most reliable tips, you'd want to either speak to the most recent graduate or current enrolees (c/o the Admissions Office).

Best Wishes.

Upadhaya,

I graduated from Emory's MBA program a couple of years back. Its a pretty good school... and the program's become even better in the recent past since they got a new dean. One of the selling points is the career office--quite proactive folks, I must say. And if you want to stay in the Southeast, esp. Atlanta which is growing rapidly, you couldn't do worse than go to Emory.

Post your email add, if you want any questions answered.

Cheers.

Hello,
Emory is a good school. There is currently 2-3 students fromm Nepal.
Also if you are concerned about the price--
Then University of Alabama(Tuscaloosa--Crimson Tide)---would be good.
Their business school is very good.
