Murchunga is a typical mucisal instruments in the eastern hills of Nepal. I have heard that musical instrument once in my life. Biraha lagchha hau sunda kheri pani... Particularly it is popular among the Rai, Limbu in the middle hills of eastern Nepal, however, everybody likes it.

Murchungaa and Binayo are the indigeneous musical instruments of Nepal that are at the verge of being "fossilized". In many Sangini and Dohori geet, there are references about these instruments. I do not know whether it is a matter of time, or the survival of the fittest but there is definitely a pattern in which we see one entity being devoured by the other. For example: Instead of Sarangi - we have Guitar Panche Baja - Band Baja Is it a sad thing? May be. But what is permanent? All things arise and pass away. Oneday the sun itself will be eaten by the black hole. A lot sooner than that, we will all turn into stardust. What is time? What is space? but an illusion.

Gokul dai, can you tell me (and whoever is interested) more about binayo? I know what murchunga is, but binayo, i saw it once on channel nepal, but don't know where/which tribe use it? I found it to be an interesting instrument.. and the song.. binayo... harayo.. something like that. Plus, your poem was really good. Better than those "i feel in love and the girl dumped me.. and now i am all depressed kind" which our kabijis and kabiyatrijis love to write on. Trailokya

TAji, So far as I know, Murchunga and Binayo are indegeneous musical instruments of Kirat groups. This can be supported by the fact that the stamp also has depicted an image of Kirat looking man playing the instruments. I am sure they have verifiable proof to put that onto the stamp. I remember only few lines related to these two instruments: 1. Chaubandi ko tuna ma murchunga ra binayo..... 2. Riting Riting..nabajau binayo..nabajau binayo... binayole man mero chinayo... aiyayaa.. aaththatha.. sannani. These both songs are very popular in Bhojpur which is also known as Majh Kirat...

parakhi ji, dhanyaabaad! do you know the whole of the binayo song? I heard it once, and I have been searching for it. If you know the song (all of it) can you email that to me. Please. And I too think murchunga belongs to kiratis. I haven't been to mustang area, but heard Thakalis (especially) women play it. Thank you very much. Binayo le mero pani maan chinayo! Trailokya Aryal

Trailokyaji, I could not remember the lines beyond that. May be you can try to find the cassettes in Kathmandu. May be trying with the following artists' album could help you: Ganesh Rasik or Hiranya Bhojpure or Shambhu Rai or Laxmi Rai or some one from eastern belt.

My Dad had a murchungaa. I remember thinking what a weird thing, how on earth are you supposed to produce music from something that looks like a little girl's hair-clip (I was 8 or 9). Dad didn't know how to play it either so I've never actually heard anyone play a murchungaa. The main reason I'll never forget what a murchungaa is is that Dad was livid when I broke the little thing in the middle, apparently the murchungaa had belonged to his great great grandfather.

Dear Arun Valley, Thank you for the URL. I'll definately check it out. I have one request to you: Once upon a time when I was a student in the US, i used to listen to real audio songs that you had in your site. I was wondering if I can download the songs-1, songs-2 and all, and play it even when I am not online because Internet in nepal is very expensive. I just wnat three songs: 1. Tan-man-bachan le prabhu naam gau. 2. Chora chahi hai maya hid-da-cha dulera 3. Saal-ko paat tapari gasera, jau hai maya nau dada katera. can you email me these songs at aryal_trai@yahoo.com, or just let me know whether i can download these three songs, save it in my computer and play them even when I am not online. Thank you again. Time for binayo song.. Trailokya
