Diabolic ji,

The relationships of Pindalu, Karkalo and Guava:

Similarities:
1. Pakauna Janena bhane khanda kokyaunchhan.
2. They can be cured, dried and preserved for later use.
3. They are the same plant.

Particular characteristics:
1. Pindalu is rhyzome, karkalo is shoot and guava is leafy edible parts.
2. You harvest guava in Saun, Karkalo in Bhadau and Pindalo in Aswin or Kartik.
3. Guava can be steamed, sun cured and dried thus preserving for a long time.
4. Karkalo can be cut into small pieces after brief sun curing and then mixed it with bean flours to make Maseura.
5. Pindalu can be put in Machan in front of your house (the bigger the machan, the more prosperous you are) and eaten later.

Hope this will satisfy some of your querries until Guruji adds some more.

Hihihi,

You are wrong and I am also wrong to spell GUAVA. It is really GAAVA. Diabolic is right..
Diabolic Posted on 27-Mar-02 05:18 PM

Parakhiji:

I was under the impression that, Gaava was made from Karakalako paat. Karaklaako dhaath is made into pieces to put into masyaura.

Pidanlu is the "bulb" of Karakalaa, this was all my understanding.

We are having this disucssion at sebsonline.org, so wanted to know if Hahoo dai could ho ma ho on my understanding.

BTW Guava is Belaauti for us Pokhreli's, also known as Amba in KTM and Gaava is completely different thing.

Others could help, but Hahoo Guru's word will stand for me.

Thanks

Diabolicji,
Pakkai ho...
I used harvest word that brought confusion.

What my parents do with this plant is:
She picks of young shooty leaves in Shaun to make curry. Karkalako pat... gaavako tarkari.. But she is careful not to harm the plant a lot by removing young buds.

Later in Bhadau, she starts removing older leaf stalks. It is the long stalk that joins the rhyzome and leaf - Karkalako danth..Now you can cut as many leaves as you like leaving minimum leaves for the survival of the plant for another few weeks.... she starts making maseura with it.

Later my father starts digging up the field in Aswin or Kartik to collect the Pindalu. He removes extra roots out of the rhyzomes, cures them by drying in indirect sun light. Later he puts it in the machan...

And we enjoy eating some curry made from this plant throughout the year.

Parakhiji: I will take your word for it. This is exactly what I thought, but there was another Gandaki Anchale vai who said otherwise.

I love those dewy mornings in Pokhara when Machapuchre smiles and the the dew collects on Karkalaako paat and drops right through the middle like pearls.
