Here's wishing all the best to Ambassador Gautam. Despite the ridiculous, widely-criticized 'recall' by the Girija Sarkar, Gautam remains an honest, sincere and hardworking man. Rumor is that Gautam is being replaced by some Sujata's (the PM's super-powerful daughter) 'manchay'. Oh well. oohi ashu *************************** Ambassador Damodar Prasad Gautam bids farewell to the Nepalese of the Americas Dear brotheres/sisters/friends: It was a great opportunity for me to serve as the Royal Nepalese Ambassador to the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Colombia, which gave me a chance to be closer with you, that I admire most. During my tenure, I tried my best to meet the Nepalese diasporas on their turf, get myself acquainted with challenges they face and opportunities they are availing of and putting into best uses. Based on my brief encounters with you on many occasions and places, I am of the firm opinion that all of you are working very hard and have created a very positive image of your motherland, which, I know is no less dearer to you than any body, living in the country. Your self-less love and patriotism are superb and unquestionable. In the Community, I have seen you expressing serious concern, whenever something goes wrong in Nepal, whose happiness and sorrow instantly affects you. I salute you for your love for your motherland. Secondly, those of you, who came long ago and raised your families right here have had ample reasons to be proud of your kids who are doing exceedingly well. I have seen some of you are having the pleasure of raising the third generation, too. Together, all of you will create a new Nepali-American society, which, countries of your origin and adoption will be equally proud of. I would like to submit that the connect that you have with Nepal is the most valuable conduit for transfer and sharing of your skill and experience with people, which will be your greatest gift to the country, please maintain continuity. Lastly, I would like to thank all of you for expressing deep concern at my premature departure from my duty station. I really enjoyed every moment of my association with you in the last two and a half years, and thank you for your support and co-operation. You really did a lot for me. My wife Shanta and grand-daughter Mreedu join me in my best wishes to you, your family and friends. February 6, 2001 Damodar Prasad Gautam Royal Nepalese Embassy Washington DC,
