Monsoon Wedding beats K3G... Mira Nair's award-winning Indian drama Monsoon Wedding continued its amazing run as the number one limited-release film at the North American box office collecting $746,693 from only 128 theaters in its fifth weekend. Off a scant 3.5% from last weekend, the USA Films release raised its total domestic gross to $3.2 million surpassing the box office take of the highest-grossing Bollywood film in U.S. history - Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (K3G). Monsoon Wedding averaged a solid $5,834 per theater and spent its second consecutive weekend in the North American Top 20. Only a small handful of foreign-language films such as Life is Beautiful, Amelie, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon have ever reached the Top 20.

IMHO, the plot of the movie is pretty cliched. Basically, the movie is about two families and the problems that they have to face before, and during a marriage ceremony. There are tons of movies that are based on this plot. The movie is doing great in the boxoffice not b/c of the storyline, but b/c marriages the Indian way is found by Europeans/Americans to be intriguing and enigmatic. But one thing is for certain. Punjabi chics are h-o-t.

That is such a simplistic view on things. Monsoon Weddings is one of the best movies out there in a long long time. Beautiful characterization, just a raw, subtle, memorable film. The plot of any movie is only part of the story and revoles around some basic themes of love, tragedy etc. THe execution is the key element and Monsoon Wedding gets full marks for that. It is no surprise that it has broken K3G record. Way to go.

I am glad to know Moonson Wedding did better than K3G. I will be even more happy if movie like Moonson Wedding fairs better also in rest the rest of the World including India. Mostly movies are made to make money both in Hollywood and in Bollywood. K3G was designed to the broad spectrum of people for business point of view so it's not going to be as palatable as Moonson Wedding which I think is designed for targetted audience.

K3G stands for Kabhie Kushi Kabhie Gamm. Please don't see this movie. it is horrible. I hated it. I watched it as I had heard soooo much about it but it was really boring and some characters are not even worth mentioning. Liked Mansoon Wedding better.
