check www.indianexpress.com Indian software exports grow by 65 percent 06th Feb 2001 18.36 IST Presenting a positive outlook for the Indian software industry, the National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) today said that the software exports had grown by more than 65 per cent during the period October-December (Q3) 2000. Addressing a press conference in Mumbai on the eve of NASSCOM 2001, the annual Indian software industry event which begins here from tomorrow, Mr. Dewang Mehta, president of NASSCOM said that presented a positive outlook for the Indian Software industry had registered revenues of Rs 7160 crore as against Rs 4345 crore for the corresponding period in 1999-2000. Nasscom has also projected that in the fiscal year 2000-01, the software exports will earn revenues in the region of Rs 28,500 crore (USD 6.24 Billion) against export revenues of Rs 17,150 crore earned during 1999-2000. Commenting on the ongoing speculation of the impact of the US economic slowdown on the Indian software exports, Mr. Mehta said, ''we have been speaking to our member companies , analysts and major clients and based on our discussion we expect no slowdown whatsoever and are confident of meeting our target of USD 6.24 billion during 2000-01 and USD 9.5 billion in 2001-02''. Elaborating on his point, Mr. Mehta said that a cut in the IT expenditure could even increase the quantum of outsourcing to India as that will help US companies improve their productivity. Keeping in mind the rapidly changing international IT landscape, Nasscom 2001 will provide the perfect platform to evolve strategies that will help ensure that the Indian software exports continue to grow by more than 50 per cent even beyond 2002. Mr. Mehta said that Nasscom 2001 will have five components - international business conference, international exhibition, technology summit, e-summit cyber exhibition and VC forum. The premier IT show will facilitate business networking. A major draw at Nasscom 2001 this year is the line up of reputed speakers from across the globe. The exhibition cum conference will be inaugurated by the minister of information technology, Mr. Pramod Mahajan with Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh also presiding over the function. Mr. Deshmukh will then cut the ribbon at the Nasscom 2001 exhibition where Mr. Mahajan will be the chief guest. The inaugural keynote for the Nasscom 2001 international business conference will be delivered by well-known NRI, Dr Arun Netravali, president, Bell Labs, who has been recently honored with the Padma Bhushan. Highlighting the Nasscom 2001 advantage, Mr. Dewang Mehta, president Nasscom said ''Nasscom 2001 is not just about the international conference and exhibition, in its current avatar it is a lot bigger and bolder than any of our earlier events. The year's event is an exciting blend of the latest technologies and cutting edge business and marketing strategies that will help Indian IT software industry gain a sustainable competitive advantage in their area of expertise. Nasscom expects business worth over Rs 2,500 crore to be generated through this event''. Mr. Mehta added ''we have large participation from Indian and MNCs at both the Nasscom 2001 business conference and exhibition. This includes 200 companies which are participating as exhibitors and the 60 companies which are sponsoring the event''. Drawing attention to the special emphasis being made at Nasscom 2001 for doing business with target countries, Mr. Dewang Mehta said ''at Nasscom 2001, we are conducting business workshops targeting UK, Belgium, Australia, UAE, Canada and the USA. at these workshops we will discuss issues relating to issuing of visa's, work-permits and the procedure for opening branches and subsidiary offices for Indian companies in these countries''. Highlighting the new opportunities and focus areas for the Indian software industry, Mr. Mehta said ''communication software has emerged as a major opportunity for Indian software exports. During the year 2000-01, we expect to earn revenues of at least Rs 4,100 crore (US dollar 900 million) from the export of communication software. This represents an almost 100 per cent jump from the revenues earned by the segment last year and keeping in mind the huge potential for Indian companies in this space we have specially invited Dr Arun Netravali, a communication software guru and president bell labs to help strategize Indian software exports in communication software''. -UNI
