Things that make you go hmmm....

It's interesting to see how the American media potrays non-white Americans.

The white-boy who was captured in Afghanistan and is under trial now is termed as : Americna Taliban

The Middle-Eastern looking guy who was captured and borught to Cuba, is now termed as: US-born Taliban. He is US-born more than he is American.

Just a thought for those who have made babies in the US to make them Americans. They will be US-born first and then only Americans.

Hi hmmmmm...

Hamrika has certainly descrimination between white-s and other-s, but the U.S. judiciary is an outstanding body that rules Amarica, not Hamrika.

You can see in your own family that your dad loves the first son, and your mom loves the last son, if you have more that two brothers. Isn't it discrimination? However, it is acceptible at some extent, ok.

American is the Best country that you can never think of comparision to other nation. You can see a true democracy in America, not in Hamrika.

Why is it that people like to play the race card with such haste? I have heard Nepalese saying they felt because they were discriminated because their order came late in restaurant. C'mon folks and I am not kidding.

In this case, I think this US born Taliban is called a US born Taliban because although he was born in US, he lived here only till he was 3 years old. I know
some Nepalese who moved here with their parents when they were 3 or 4 years old. Should I call them Nepalese? Sure they were born in Nepal but the similarities ends there. For every practical purpose, these kids are Americans. They think like one, speak like one and act one like. So I have no problem if American born Saudi who lived here only till he could barely walk, is called a US born Taliban. Where is the racism here? impilicit or explicit.

Personally, I have been in this country for a while and these white folks that people like to bash so much or Americans in general, I think, they have been very nice to me and with most of the people I know here. I think that is one of the reasons why many Nepalese here have been successful. Of course, we have worked very hard for our successes but my point is not everything that happens to us is racism and I for one is gettign tired of people playing this sensitive card all the time. I think a little bit of gratitude is due from us to our hosts. Thanks!

Neplese are discriminated in their own country. Some of them are not even allowed to enter temples. Go Back Home if you don't like it here... always complaining blah blaha blahh...
GratefulAlive Posted on 05-Apr-02 11:09 AM

Hrithik Roshan and the backlash against Nepalese Indians, and those that looked Madhesis, and their property - isn't that discrimination? Caste system in Nepal - doesn't that lead to discrimination? I know foreigners that have served Nepal all their adult life, have lived in Nepal more than you and I, and have been denied citizenships eg Pritam Singh (didn't have citizenship till last year) - isn't that discrimination.
Be grateful that America gives you the opportunity to come, to get education, to get your residency, to work and live there. Go to Europe and Asia and see how well you get treated compared to America!

That's right Moosi. We, Nepalese (I am assuming you are a Nepali), rank right up there when it comes to discrimination and racism. I hope this changes overtime. Thanks!

Dear Grateful Alive, Moosi and whoever,

Every paragraph praising USA does not need to end in a line, "if you don't like here go back to wherever you come from." To be grateful is one thing that the USA embraces us immigrants and potential immigrants whether we come from a boat, plane, or walking hundred of miles in the snake infested desert without so much a drop of water and still talk about what one sees as a racist act. We can have a dialogue and be still faithful to our birth country and adoptive country.

This line personally irks me greatly that "if you don't like it go back!" Does it mean, we should be blind and mute as long as somebody throws a golden crusted bread or a crumb? Of course one can and be happy with it, but others may want to think and talk about where that crumbs come from and how and how many are hungry while you are eating that crumbs.

(by the way halo von sunny and bubbly California!)

The point is not that we claim not to be racist, or that racism exists in Nepal but that a super civilized country like this- a place that we so look upto that we were inspired to come to, study in, work in....is hinged on an inchronous sense of human relations and nationality, remnants of racism- strictly in opposition to what the academic institutions here so strongly attempt to repel. A degree of sarcasm is inevitable, when the real world operations and manipulations don't fit quite perfectly with the ideals and conceptions harbored in academic institutions. This would be a fairly accurate and majoritarian portrayal, as most of us were initiated into this system through academia.

Therefore, perhaps a stronger point would be that it is despicable that mass media is being utilized to slightly molest that bias. Call it nationality. for one who embraces plurality that is very distasteful. This does not equate as saying that all people here should be impeccable. Or that all people are alike. That overtones of bias overtly displayed in media and intitutionalized is what bothers the original poster.

But then news seeks to reach a wider cross section. From Henry the investment banker, to Carl the professor to Rachel the riveter at Ford plant. And whoever said that selling news always has to be driven by some classicist ideal and not merely a business? You peddle what you can sell, so you shade it, flavor it, massage it

discrimination is exist in america. It mayn't be in the book of law but it exist in day to day life. Recent speech by Halley Barry during oscar also shows it. So, we need to voice against discrimination. America provide us education, jobs or nepal do have discrimination doesn't mean we should keep quiet and accept racial discrimination here. hmmm has pointed good argument. Recent study also shows that there is discrimination againts black but black people has many leaders and organization who can voice against it but for asian who live in america there is no organization or leader who can speak against it. Asian just accept it by smiling or america provide us food or education which is enough . I think it is wrong mentality and asian american need to voice against any racial discrimination we face here. this is just my thought.

Analysis you need to do folks before showing off symtoms of diarrhia while talking...
The American system needs to make a distinction between those belonging to the US and those from other countries (YES America treats citizens and non-citizens differently as far as crimes are concerned; e.g. foreigners are sometimes deported for crimes). If the Saudi Taliban probably is a foreigner, there is no discrimination if he is called a US born foreigner.
