thought i share this with u guys. i have been listening to this song by arun thapa called "ritu haru ma timi" for many years now. but i guess i had never given much thought to the lyrics then one day as i was listening, one line in the song caught my attention. in that song he says "pawitra chan timra ti laja ka gahana tara chahana le vijeka chan oot(lips) haru" i have never heard anyone say so much in so few words on such topic. espically in nepali songs. or any song in any other language for that matter. was wondering if u guys have noticed the same thing. would like to hear your thoughts. Suman Dhakal PS. please don't confuse me with this other guy/gal who goes by the name "suman" on this message board. i'm "suman dhakal"

Suman ji, I think there are plenty of songs. Most lok geet and even adhunik geet if you pay very close attention you will find such meaning. I can think of many but one in particular drew my attention when you brought this up. (Sainli Ghanyeri Ban ma ) In this song, a guy says, "Sainli Chha Maina Chhutti, Bityo Lanundai ma kaukutti." Narayan Gopal's song - "Chumera pana bhari" has lines like "Kehi chin ko nimti timilai udaang dekhi dinchu" And "Galti Hazaar hunchan" has "Mera yee haat haru le kanhi ghaat garna sakcha Ani pyaar garda gardai paap pani garna sakcha" I heard both of these songs were banned by Radio Nepal until 1991.

Yea there are many Nepali lok geets which are very explicit. Some I know are... "Baansa ka jhikra saili ti pahela tighra(thigh)...taro hanna dinthyou ki......." "Budi kanya hauli...au sungai basaa...bainsa ramro cauda ra pandra (14/15) ma.." (If you look from Western perspective...this song definately is not appropiate......14/15 years old are children...)

I think the thread wasn't about explicitness in songs, but about subtleness in very few words. Yes, Sumanji, Arun Thapa is ,also, one of my favorites. Usually, I don't look for subtle messages in songs. I think songs are kind of filled with 'chaltaa purjaa'(catchy) words. Normally, that makes them more famous. I concede that my most favorite Arun Thapa song is 'Jati Mayaa Laaye Pani' , and that too for its instant appeal. To get subtle messages, we read poems. Narayan Gopal was great in the sense that his some hit songs are also the superb poems. His music was normally unique. I have never seen any other songs like Duitaa Phoola Deuraalimaa, Mero Ghaau Timi ..etc. It increasingly seems like only Narayan Gopal could make such songs hit.

yes, that is what i was implying, the "subtleness in very few words" . thanx a lot biswaji for pointing that out. and yes, Duitaa phoola deuraalima is a great song and is one of my favorite by narayan gopal. and "malai nasodha kaha dukcha ghaoo" was written by hari bhakta katuwal when he was in a hospital. people would come and ask how he was doing. was he feeling well or not. and from that experience of his emerged the song "malai nasodha kaha dhukcha ghaoo" Suman Dhakal
