Hi! I’m a second year student studying at a college in the East Coast, currently doing an ethnographic study on the smallest minorities in the United States, focusing especially on the Nepali Community. I’m very interested in finding more about the role of the media (especially the internet) in the shaping/forming of the community and these surveys are a major part of my paper/project. I’ve posted some questions below and I hope that you can answer any if not all of the questions. You can be as detailed as you want to. In fact, the more details the better. 9) If you came here for studies, do you plan on working in the United States after your studies? If so, do you plan on going back to Nepal some day?
12)Do you feel that having a community helps to preserve Nepali culture/tradition? Is this important to you?
13) Do you attend the community gatherings? How frequent are the gatherings?
14)Do you feel that you have “settled in”/adjusted well? How difficult/easy has it been? Could you give examples?
Media-Related Questions:
15a) What were your first impressions of the United States? How much of these views were media-influenced?
15b) Have these views changed or stayed the same since you’ve been here? If they’ve changed, how so and why?
16) Assuming you came alone, what was/is it like coming to the United States without other family members/parents? Does having a “web community” help?
17) What do you think of the media representations of Nepalese/South Asians? Are they negative? Positive?
18) Has the media affected the way you perceive yourself? What does it mean to be a Nepali to you? Do you identify yourself as one?
19)Do you watch Hindi/Nepali films or television programs? Why or Why not?
If so, do you feel that watching these films/programs have any “cultural value” for you?
