I have a nepali friend with an oriental feature. and thus people ask her if she is from china or japana or korea etc. she gets frustrated when people ask her that. and i was wondering if any of u guys out there have been in similar situations. and how do u handle it? do u get offensive or try to explain them ?

Hey dude, what's her ethnicity? If she's bahun or chettri, and if people ask her if she's Chinese, of course she'll get offended. But she's Gurung or some other mongol, and if she's asked if she's Chinese, I don't think she shouldd be offended.

People think I am from India, Iran, Afghanistan or Arabia; I am bahun. Do u think I'm offended by what they think? Of course not, coz bahuns look middle eastern!
aneversario Posted on 18-Apr-02 06:11 PM

How about always being told "you DON'T look Nepali"...what does that mean? Are all Nepalis supposed to look mongloid? I agree, why feel obligated to explain or get offended? It's just a natural question...I guess (?) (?)
JJ Freeze Posted on 18-Apr-02 06:28 PM

Aneversario,
So, u got asked the question, "You don't look Nepali"? I get asked the same question again and again. I have come to the conclusion that dhotis, Pakistanis and South East Asians think of Nepalis as being mixed, i.e. Indonesian-looking, with small, slanted eyes, broad face and short stature. If u got big eyes, long nose and caucasian characteristics, then that means, u don't look "Nepali". These friggin' dhotis think all Nepalis look mixed. Really pisses me off. Persians or Afghans, on the other hand think Nepalis look like Indians, and when they see that I look middle-eastern, they comment, "You don't look Indian, u look middle-eastern. I thought u're from Iran".
kirancheetrifan Posted on 18-Apr-02 06:57 PM

well, I don't know why ppl generalize things. I have been asked many times that I don't look nepali??... common gimme a break, do all white considered american even though they could be europe or whatever the fuk they are comin' from. if someone says to me" you don't look nepali.I say "pal.. you don't look canadian" if the person happens to be white ( and canada is always to good to blame by the way:)) and for those hommies, I tell em " yo G dawg, you ain't llokin' like real mo@#&in' afircan ".It's like saying every black ppl in hongkong is either shaq or kobe!!!.. anyone saw rush hour 2??.. peace
Nisha Posted on 18-Apr-02 10:28 PM

Excuse me but Nepalis ALSO have the same problem. I was in Nepal 6 months ago and I was confronted at least 5 times with the same, "ayye, tapai Nepali??" Sure, I don't have the mongoloid features but the last time I checked, I'm sure 100% Nepali. So, I would think twice before you start pointing fingers as to who does this because I've grown up in Nepal with this and obviously still hasn't changed. It's nothing to get offended about but funny how we all have this bias about what Nepalis are supposed to look like. We all do!!
Johnny on Crack Posted on 19-Apr-02 05:02 AM

I agree with JJ Freeze. People usually think that Nepalis look like Indonesians or Malaysians. A Pakistani banker once said to me, after I told her I'm Nepali, "What????? Nepalis usually have small eyes. You look different. I thought u're Sikh. Your eyes are really big". Well folks, Indians and Pakistanis don't know what Nepalis look like.
Nisha, you might have gone to Nepal staying in the US for long, so you might have dressed differently. Perhaps that's why they thought you're not Nepali.
Sangya Posted on 19-Apr-02 06:55 AM

People think that I am Irani, Afgani,Spanish, Indian but many of my cousins look chineese. I remember being harrassed by our Spanniel bros, I hate it when they give me a knowing look and try to talk to me. I wish I looked Oriental too.
NK Posted on 19-Apr-02 08:56 AM

When I was taking a few classes in Brandeis, Chinese students used to ask me if I curled my hair ( to look more indian) and if I profess for my love for cheese they would get offended that I was trying to be European/American. Indians used to ask if I were from Hawaii. Walking down in Tijuana, Mexico Mexicans would greet me in Spanish and when I was trying to buy something in Bangkok speaking in English, Thai i people would think I was puting on air by not speaking my "own" language that is Thai. At work they think I am mixed between Italian and Mexican. In Duesseldorf in one of the supermarket aisles one German asked me if my husband was a soldier and "found" me in some town in India. I can go on and on about this "ethnic" look I have. The same "exotic" feature sometimes becomes a topic of the moment and the same feature invites racial slurr some small town in France.

What can I say? I have moved beyond these comments. I hear and I forget, and I just go on.

Johnny on Crack - No, it wasn't because I was dressed differently - like I said in my email, it has always happened in Nepal (when I lived there). This is the same case for my sister. We are total bahuns...

So, you cannot say that only Indians or Pakistanis make the mistake because I'm a living example of how Nepalis do it too.
aneversario Posted on 19-Apr-02 11:35 AM

Nepalis are quite capable of making the same mistake as Americans, Chinese, Indians, Pakistanis or anyone that is only exposed to National Geographic's latest spread on "the people of Nepal" that are always mongloid looking. The sad thing is that at least other nationalities have an excuse for why they don't know any better...all of their geographic education comes from the media which tends to show only generalities of most countries (and, since our mongloid looking bros and sista's are in the majority that's all people ever see) but, come on you Nepalis that generalize too...you should know better--there are some of us out there that have caucasian features and are just as Nepali as you... I get it all the time in Patan, Thamel and Bhaktapur, especially when I get asked, " excuse me, do you need tour guide?"...heeeeeehheeee...
BDM Posted on 19-Apr-02 04:43 PM

Nisha,
Don't worry, u're not the only one. Back when I was in Nepal, Nepalis thought I was marwari :). But curiously here in the US, I don't get confused for an Indian a lot. People think I'm Arab, Iranian, Afghan, North African, and some think I'm Pakistani. Nepalis can look like anybody. I have a cousin(a pure Nepali, btw), who's blonde haired and blue eyes. My other cousin gets confused for Greek or Italian. My dad also looks Italian.
But But Posted on 19-Apr-02 05:33 PM

But.... HoW about the people who asks, "are you a nepali" in a nepali Party. I think that most of the girls do that, dont know what for. Our looks have different ethnicity, but hey c'mon nepalese asking a nepali in a nepali party, "are you also a nepali". I think thats hillarious and degrading.
jagatdogg Posted on 19-Apr-02 05:45 PM

I guess there isn't just one "look" when it comes to us Nepalis. We are a melting pot just like the US. At some point in time we all converged in one area and adopted a cultural identity that gave some commonality. However, the topic that has been raised seems to have touched us all at some point in our lives. I must admit, I too have had the same comment..."but you don't look Nepali" from Americans, Indians, Pakistanis, Canadians, etc., AND yes, other Nepalis too.
David Ellefson Posted on 19-Apr-02 07:45 PM

Nepal is highly diversified place with physical features ranging from asiatic, middle eastern ,south european and even pitch black african skin.Lot of people consider me having Mediterreanean features ... There is nothing to feel offended about looks ....How the hell can u change your looks.Lots of East Europeans look more horrible than many Third World people.
j. doe Posted on 19-Apr-02 08:08 PM

Hey dude, u're wrong about East Europeans. I have seen some Slav chics, they're hot as hell.
And how do u define a mediterranean looking person? Do u take East Indians as mediterranean, or do u just mean Southern Europeans and Middle Easterners??? Can a guy with medium brown skin be mediterranean?
