What follows is a letter to editor, first PUBLISHED in today's (Friday's)
The Kathmandu Post.

***********************************

Sir,

Appropos Akhilesh Upadhyay's tribute (The Kathmandu Post,
April 16) to your former editor Shyam Bdr. KC, I wanted to add
these words.

In April 1996, Mr. KC decided to give, once a month,
an entire editorial page of The Kathmandu Post to
book-loving, loosely organized young professional
Nepalis in Kathmanbdu to put together and publish
what has since come to be known as "The Kathmandu
Post Review of Books".

Mr. KC's decision was remarkably bold because it was
(and is still) quite unheard-of for Nepal's newspaper
editors to hand over an entire page or two every month
to untested non-journalist outsiders who simply wanted
to pursue, as was in this case, their passion of
reading and writing about books and ideas in a
non-commercial way.

As regular readers know, the Review [still going strong after
6 years] is now put together by a collective at Martin Chautari, and
is published in this newspaper on the second and the last
Sunday of every month.

I wish Mr. KC all the best, and I hope that one
of the many lessons we can distill from his rich
and varied professional life is that a good editor,
or for that matter a good executive, is not afraid
to take risks with ideas even when those ideas come
from outside.

Sincerely,
Ashutosh Tiwari
Sifal, Kathmandu

PS: Siwalik, if you are reading this, could you please re-send your review? I am sorry that apparently, Martin Chautari's computer somehow seems to have lost your email and I don't have a copy either. Seira does want your review. Please do send another copy both to me and to: chautari@mos.com.np Thanks.

Ashu:

I had sent an opinion piece about "designer babies" and its implication for us. I was disappointed cuz of non-response from the concerned party and was wondering about Nepali etiquette. But well, you have cleared things out for me. I will resend an example piece this weekend.

Thanks.
