I hear that there is an active organization of Nepali people in the US with the name of Alliance for Democracy. I recall Alliance For Democracy doing some sort of Opinion Poll in Kathmandu around late 90s. Could someone please enlighten me on the whereabouts of AFD? Appreciate any pointer. Rishi Baral

It has since (around mid 90s) turned into a social club for "If_situation_improves_in_Nepal__ I wouldl be the Next PM" political analyst (analist, rather), of predominantly NY area. _diwas

Diwasji: Not exactly. I don't think people like Khagendra Chhetri (lawyer by profession and father figure of the organization), and Rajendra Shresetha (former president and engineer) harbour political ambitions -- at least not the type you seem to refer to. They have settled here for good. From my interaction with them (I have been living in New York for the last two years, and have been loosely associated with the organization), I gather that their intentions are honest: let's do whatever we can to help Nepalis; so much the better if that helps our social standing too. But you *are* right about the other point, though. The organization, which has a messy history of infighting, has failed to recruit young members, and has largely lost its early dynamism. Many Nepalis, even within New York, say it's degenerated into a social club, representing basically a certain group of people, and far from representative of Nepalis in the city.

What about Shail Upadhyay? Who always introduced himself as the pres of Alliance For Democracy in Nepali press?

They have settled here for good. ---- You are right. When I was in NY last year, I met Rajendra Shrestha, who was my RoomMate and a very good friend of mine during my college studies and talked about AFD. He was telling me that they are doing pretty well especially, in bringing Nepalis in NY closer and some activities in Nepal as time permits. Well, being it an organization of Nepalis, with negative, sarcastic and pessimistic attitude by birth, there are some "...." happenings and most of them were usually solved through discussions. Because most us have double life, one in public (we are easily agreeable in face to face discussions) and one in private ( we usually disagree when we are doing Kothe rajnity). I met 3 sets of peoples in NY at 3 occasions, they all told me that AFD is doing pretty well in bringing Nepali-NYker, but, they had some personal differences with each other. Thats natural. Instead of running behind rumors, I suggest Nepalis in NY to contact RS or other officials directly. AFD had great contribution in the past and it can be a good useful tool in maturing Democracy in Nepal via the Nepalis in NY. Well, they said that there are about 10,000 Nepalis in NY. I am not sure whether this statistic is true. hGxP
