I believe lots of Nepali people in America is going to ANA convention in Washington. I was just wondering if it is going to be fun and informative, or just the waste of time and money like that happened last year. I heard that the convention in DC is going to be fun, but i just don't believe it. I am determined about going to DC. Guys, give me something to believe in, so that i can get my butt to ANA convention. Give me some reasons why i should be there. Last year's convention was not fun. If i hadn't met my long lost friends, it would be devastating. The organisers were simply interested on makin' money than makin' it a great reunion of Nepali People. Soccer game was not fun. It was just a competition between Nepalese in Washington and NY, which i thought would be a perfect example of brotherhood. The first thing organisers were worried about was registering the new people and making $25 or something. The dinner in the first day of convention was not good either. It was some saltless indian food and it was gone in 1/2 an hour. Guys were hanging with their group and one group of guys would stare the other group as if they were long lost enemies. Girls were not fun either. They were hanging either with their parents or friends, and all they did was a "Fashion show" on the lobby of the hotel. They were really unfriendly. I tried to talk with few girls, and they acted as if i was trying to hit on them. Although i was just quenching my thirst of talkin' with nepalese in a long time. Old people were cool, nice to talk, funny and cordial. I also saw the competition of schools. Ex-budanilkantha organised reunion, and Ex-vanasthalians were jealous. Ex-vanasthalians simply overshadowed ex-students of other schools, and they were jealous too. Bar in the evening was only place where it was fun. Nepali people need a bit of alcohol in their system to speak up. All the seminars were worthless. "Kabita saanjh" was not fun either. It's hillarious to see some jackasses, who might have failed all the nepali classes in his school, were the judge. Despite all, some of poems were funny. Pushkar(the guy who travelled round the world on his bike) was honored the first day. By the next day, he was nobody. He was wandering, hungry(since he didn't have much money) and ANA didn't even bother to buy a lunch (please don't come up with excuse, coz he had lunch with us one day since he was really hungry). ANA was busy playing with the balls of some so-called accomplished Nepali. Miss america nepal.. hahaha... i ROTFLOL when i remember that show. The program was full of technical problem, and none of the gals were intelligent enough to answer the simple question. By the way, i dont' really understand, why they had to organise Miss nepal to give the scholorship to the student? isn't ANA capable of finding those kids who came from nepal, and who are unable to get scholorship, live hand to mouth and always get good grades? wouldn't it be better if they gave needy-and-bright students a scholorship? brunch was baaad. it was worst than the first dinner they served. And everyone was on the line trying to get whatever they can in the brunch. And suddenly, somebody spoke in the mic, he was really pissed and tellin' everyone "what you guys doing, you guys were supposed to sit on the table until they call the table number" and nobody cared. The show after that was also irritating. The sound problem was still there. and it was full of dances........... eh. i don't even wanna remember that. if the washington convention is going to be something like that, i should reconsider mine going to ANA convention.. GIVE SOME SUGGESTION

dear freek sathi, That is the whole problem with Nepali trying to organize events. The sound system is the first apparent problem you encounter everywhere you go to these organized events. Also they don't know how to keep any program short. Everything has to go on and on. If it were not for meeting some interesting people (from the board) I would not even think once to go to this "convention." Don't get your hopes high. Then, you might have fun. Hey I am glad they canceled this beauty pagaent thing. On top of everything they wanted to show-case women in the name of scholarship! No F******ing kidding!

On top of that the organizers this time are bunch of crap people from DC metro. Some of them I know personally and they just like previous f...ing panches. I highly recommend you guys and gals, please go somewhere else instead of coming in DC if you dont wanna spoil your long weekend.

It's not worth it. All these people who are coming to the conventions are pretty well-set Nepalese especially in DC. Instead of going there...read a book. You will learn something (at least one vocab word per say). Don't waste your money especially if you are a student...you will not find any girls! If you are going there for information, technology is in our side now. Post your questions here and you will get sincere advice and responses. However, if you just wanna experience something new than go for it...who knows you might like it. I had fun but it wasn't a blast. Whether I'm going or not is still up in the air. This is just my opinion.

I am sure that the organizers in DC are trying to do the best they can for the ANA convention. We should be thankful for their PERSONAL time and effort so that we can all come together as a community. These organizers are not PAID to do all this. Why don't we appreciate that due to the people like these, we at least have a convention. We often talk about our money's worth when it comes to Nepalese programs. Do we try to justify all our expenses, every time ? I admit that our organizations have learning curves to go through but surely we will grow in time. Let's not be too hard to the organizers because like any organizer within Nepalese community, I am sure DC organizers are also understaffed and overworked. It's so sad to see that even in US, we have built a culture of sitting on our butt and complain and complain and complain...

Haha.. right said Fren!! Me likee your straight forward response. well same here, i might go but i don't wanna go. But like i said, it should be worth wasting money. My hard earned money, which i always think three times before spending it. By the way who is this Vertical Horizon, who is inclining his diagonal opinion all over the circle with his eyes all square??? Those organiser might not be paid to do all those things, but they might know which finger they have to use in order to empty honey jar. Otherwise, why would they fight to have convention at their place? Like you said, we have built a culture of sitting on our butt and complain. Same culture tells us not to believe on SOME nepali people, for they are simply expert in finding a hole in the butt. By the way i was not complaining, noone is complaining. Its just another opinion. Just wondering what is the reason for going to Washington. By the way, everybody talks about moneys worth coz its not your fathers earning that we are spending, this is our hard earned money, this is our blood, sweat and tears which would obviously not be justified spending on some so-called i-love-nepal-jackasses.

I don't think we are complaining. We are just simply laying out our experience. I don't see anything wrong in that...afterall we are in the USA and freedom of speech is our prerogative. Some people see glass half full and some see it half empty. Will you pay for me to go to the convention? Some of us have to bust our butt to earn 6 dollars an hour. SO, yes when we pay almost $100 to go to the convention not including hotel; we do expect something! I don't think you have any credibilty to stop us from expressing how we feel. Now come to think of it...I would rather sposor "Diyalo" than spend my money in ANA convention. I am just contemplating here!

Dear Freek & Fren, I understand your freedom of speech and also your freedom of choice. I have been to a few ANA Conventions in the past and yeah, it's not the greatest show on earth but it's progressively getting better. You should comtempate the worth of your hard earn money but to me, it's worth it. Freek : BTW, if any of those girls had talked to you, would this decision be some what easier ( no sarcasm, fun indended) :)))) Disclaimer : Horizon is not associated with ANA or DC organizers in anyway.

As long as none of you is making any concerted efforts in improving the show stop griping about it. So it does not measure of to your subjective idea of what its supposed to be, well boo fuc king hoo. Otherwise just get there get drunk. Drink like the nincompoops that you really are. Make an ass out of yourself. After all only when we get liquored up and act like uncordinated durnk village idiots, we won't have fun anyways, so embrace the culture. Every place needs it little laugh and comedy, DC is getting its present in the summer. On the other hand, if you are really up for it, find something positive in the mere fact that the event attracts so many people because of an idea that binds us all together. But be warned your ideas of what that idea may be different than mine, can you handle that?

I go to the conventions to meet friends and do guff gaff over chilled beer(s). That's my fun. Rest are just details.
