Transcript: US Dept of State Press Briefing, Apr 23, 2002. (only Nepal related q&a is here) Richard Boucher is the State Dept Spokesman. ----------------------------------------------------- QUESTION: Since the United States started its war against global terrorism in Afghanistan, it received global support to fight terrorism around the globe. But the people of Nepal are still waiting and watching when they will see the light of hope when the United States will come to rescue them; because, every day the Maoist terrorists are -- activities are taking place. MR. BOUCHER: I don't think you can operate on the assumption that the United States has to go everywhere to fight every terrorist. I would say at the same time, though, you have to know that we are working very closely with the people in Nepal. The Secretary was out there coordinating with them right from the -- very soon after these troubles began again. We have continued to work with Nepal. They have asked us for help from the United States and from other countries in overcoming the Maoist insurgency, as well as dealing with the pressing economic and social needs. We had meetings April 3rd and 4th in Washington with the Nepalese Foreign Secretary, and with him we discussed ways in which we can support Nepal in combating the Maoist insurgency and assisting in Nepal's economic development. We are assessing Nepal's needs and reviewing several options for military assistance to Nepal. We have asked Congress for a supplemental appropriation of $20 million in foreign military financing for Nepal so that we can support more assistance. We have also been providing development assistance directed towards immediate, high-impact job creation programs to promote development and improve living conditions for Nepalese in rural areas. Once again, we reiterate our support for the right of Nepal to safeguard its citizens against these guerrillas within the framework of its own constitution. --------------------------------------------------- read entire transcript at http://www.state.gov/r/pa/prs/dpb/2002/9649.htm

diwas k, I hope that US congress will pass the assistance package for Nepal. The US is one of the good friend of Nepal and a top donor to Nepal. The will of Maoist to fight with any enemy should not be disregarded because they already knew that western nations might help to the Nepalese government in every sort of assistance, i. e. finance, weapon, training etc. The main question is that will our government learn a lesson from this war? Getting assistance from the US for this critical time is a good thing to fight against Maoist. Now, we can depict our nation that how weak it is interms of finance and national integrity. Good Bless Nepal
