US to offer Nepal $20 million to crush rebels

Washington, April 24: The Bush administration has asked Congress to grant $20 million in military aid to Nepal's government as it battles Maoist rebels held responsible for 2,700 deaths during a bitter insurgency.
"We are assessing Nepal's needs and reviewing several options for military assistance with Nepal," State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said.
"We've asked Congress for a supplemental appropriation of $20 million in foreign military financing for Nepal, so that we can support more assistance," he said.
"Once again, we reiterate our support for the right of Nepal to safeguard its citizens against these guerrillas within the framework of its own constitution." Nepal asked for help from the United States and other countries, including Britain and Russia, after launching a crackdown on the mounting Maoist insurgency.
