It's coz we are born leaders, while you folks are born followers. Please keep in mind that while the maoist leaders are mostly bahuns, the Maoist soldiers are mostly Janajatis. Nepali Janajatis that have gone rotten are mostly petty robbers and thugs, while bahuns that have gone rotten are hardcore terrorists, who can persuade any ethnicity to do their bidding, even when they aren't the ones that actually fight. Sorry dudes, your response towards bahuns dominant presence in every domains of society is nothing but a crude resentment. Try to see a big picture and do not generalize. There are good bahuns and bad bahuns, rich bahuns (though Bahuns do not rank top by wealth-holding)and poor bahuns, smart bahuns and dull bahuns; so is the case with other ethnic groups.
It is true the some historical development might have favoured bahun/chhetri to prosper in some areas, such as Prithibi Narayan Shaha's victory over valley made their language as National language. It it up to an individual to harness such opportunity. This is also true that the Janjati groups are lagging behind in many respects, but it is not fair to put the whole blame to bahuns. It is now a fashion to argue as if Bahuns ran an organized campaign of "bahunbaad" to prevent other ethnic groups to prosper. This kind of attitude is not helping to improve the situation of Janajati. It simply help to mask the contradictions within the groups. An unwarranted debate of Bahun/chhetri Vs others is underway (unfortunately) which distracts our energy away from more relevant and pressing debate of Development Vs Backwarness of Nepali society.

Cut the crap of Bahun, Chhetry, Newar, Gurung. You should not just look for diversity in a community but look for the richness it brings in a community.

It is indeed truly ignorant in the part of some people to generalize and ‘blame’ particular ethnic groups in regards to what is happening in Nepal at this present day. It is also not fair for Nepali people from those ethnic groups to be ‘blamed’ just because of their ethnicity and caste. When it comes down to basic human feelings, we all are the same. We feel good when we help others, we feel happy when we get what we want, we become anxious when someone tries to dictate us, we try to hide our faults as much as possible and unconsciously, we are selfish.
Just like our feelings, Racism is in the ‘RAGAT’ of every person. We all belong to some race. Our ethnicity, our physical features, our culture, our tradition, our language, our religion and our practices determine to which race we belong. And of course all these races constitute the human race. Some people are hardcore racists and others are not. This feeling of racism is not a negative feeling; it should not corrupt your mind, it should not be a root to any disharmony, hostility or antagonistic feelings. It is something we all should be proud of. We are all Nepali but we are also Gurungs, we are Mallas, we are Tharus, we are Sherpas, we are Bahuns, and so on and so forth. Let’s be proud of what we are. Let’s take pride of our ancestry, our tradition and our culture. Let’s teach others our language and heritage. Let’s share our beliefs and wisdom with others. But let us not SPOIL the name of our race.
The person who started this Kurakani is another frustrated Nepali among millions who thinks Bahuns are to be blamed. But I don’t blame him. It is easy to blame others. But sometimes it becomes necessary to do that.
It hurts when some people generalize the blame to a certain race of people and you happen to fall into that group. You retaliate but what do you achieve? All you’ll get in return is more retaliation. This is exactly what is happening all over the world.
Let’s take our situation Nepal. You hear a lot of ‘Bahun haru le Nepal khatam paryo…Girija bahun chor….Nepal chod…bahun kattha…bahun kutta…churse bahun…lovi bahun….etc etc….. Why this bahun bahun bahun? Is it simply that other Nepali are jealous of what Bahuns have achieved or is it that bahuns are truly what they are in the previous sentence. We all know what we are.
I could go on and on but I want to stop here. I just want to say to you all that…. let’s bring peace and harmony to our country. It can be done. So many people have lost their lives. They did not die for nothing. Let’s all take pride of our race and work hard to bring an end to this suffering. Don’t let your race down. Don’t spoil the name of your race. Give something to others. GIVE HOPE and HAPPINESS!

Although I am not bahun, most of my friends are bahun. I haven't think a single moment about bahun, chetri and so on. All we are looking is Nepali. So, it is up to us how you can deal the situation. It is true that most of the bahuins are in higher political ppost in Nepal. But it is because of their capacity not because of race. We need to broden our thinking .

I agree that no one should respond to racist comments. It just degrades the society and tells the world where we are. Even though there are a few of the racist ones, these are the ones that cause trouble. Look at the riots in India, it is started by these type of people. I hope that it will not happen in Nepal. Every one needs to be aware of these racist people. These people that try to provoate each other. Let us all be aware of these "rakshas (devils) so that Nepal and Nepali can have one less thing to worry about.
British started the policy of "divide and rule" in India, start of racist politics. We need to learn from that and know that when people are divided some one else takes advantage of it. Afghanistan is the latest example of what happens when people are not united...

My stupidity knows all the bounds and I think I am quite sane enough to have finished my Graduate programme. I have talked to enough people to know wha's what. The cause of the problem is Guussh. When you see Baaje`'s like Girija doing well. Baaje`'s like Prachanda are all sour grapes cause they cannot get any peice of that PIE. Communism is dead everywhere. Except for the Bahuns who are trying to get their pockets filled and are using Mao as an excuse.

This is for all the ignorant Bahuns who still live in Nepal and abroad.
Nepal comprises of many different races and ethnic groups, almost 50 of them and most of them have their own predominant language. The Mongoloid-featured people, mostly comprising of Tamangs, Sherpas, Gerunds, Newars, Rais, Limbus, Thakalis, Magars and many more originated in Tibet and migrated south towards the mountain regions of Nepal.
Now the Bahuns migrated from India (north-western). So they were officially DHOTIS before. Some of them intermingled with the Mongoloid people and became Chettris, Thapa Magars and Newars. The Bahuns brought the Nepali (devanagari) script into Nepal.
Well, the Bahuns were very cunning (not smart) and mostly they were priests (pundit, baje, pujari). They used Hindu Religion and the name of God to get into the high ranking positions in Kathmandu and other parts of Nepal. That is why you still see mostly Bahuns in those positions. Also they were writers (they knew how to write, and did not want to teach other’s to write). They wrote poems and manipulated people’s mind. They wrote books and they were considered literate. Slowly and steady they took over Nepal, especially in politics and literacy. They used their shrewd mind to govern the country. (Remember the Ranas were mostly Bahuns).
The other people kept quiet. WHY? Because the other people were isolated in their own region and villages and werebusy with their farming and trading lives. The Bahuns were not any threat to them at that time (at least in territorial aspect). They were known as Katthare Jaat. Still is.
That was many years ago. Now times have changed and the Bahuns still want to run the country like they did 1000 years ago. They think they are superior to everyone. They do not like people from other ethnic groups in high positions. They allowed one or 2 here and there just to make them look liberal. They did not want other people to get educated and learn how to read and write. They still do that. The literacy rate in Nepal proves that. They don’t like to associate with other Jatis. You can still see that trend in Nepal as well as many Bahuns in America (even young Bahuns, shame on them!)
I have plenty of Bahun friends and some of them don’t have that Bahun EGO (just a little bit). Bahun ko Jaat ta dekhai halcha. LOL.
But my problem is Bahuns in Nepal. Both the politician Bahuns and the Terrorist bahuns.
All these Bahuns are doing in manipulating people’s mind and making them kill each other. I think they want to get rid of all the other races. Because these Bahun Maoist Leaders are safe as well as the Bahun Government GADHAS. SO it’s the other people who are getting killed and destroyed. And I think the Bahuns have been very successful in doing this. I think we should start a RACE war in Nepal as see who wins!
Many lives will get lost but hey in the end someone will learn a lesson. And then let’s start a new era. Otherwise the only SOLUTION I see is for these RACIST, COMMUNIAL Bahuns to OPEN up and stop controlling everyone.
By the way, I am a Brahmin (Jai Bhole nath) and I will support anyone against these CORRUPTED bahuns!

Magars, Gurungs, Rais, Tamangs, Limbus, just to name a few. You think they like each other? The "mongols" DO try to show that they are united, but they're just being pretentious. If a Magar came to power, and decided to make their language the official language, do u think the Tamangs, or Gurungs are gonna support the decision? haha, nope! Fact is, Nepali, a bahun language, has helped in uniting Nepal.
FYI, North-Western Nepal was always Khasi. Bahuns didn't have to come from anywhere; we were always there. It was the Tibeto-burman groups that came to Nepal, not the bahuns. Just look at the Nepali mongols, they all look like Tibetans. I can't really differentiate a Tibetan from a Nepali Gurkha. But bahuns look totally different from Indians. I can recognize a bahun from a mile away. We have very distinct features.
Truth is, there are only two ethnic groups that are really united, the bahuns and the chettris( and perhaps Newars). That's why they're on top.
I'm not trying to instigate hatred here, but hey, I wasn't the one who started this jacked up topic.

Sanskrit, Hindi, Nepali, English, German, Iranian and Italian are all indo-european languages. Nepali falls under the Indo-European branch. Indeed, Nepali is a native language of the bahuns. Racism is the evil that has done so much harm to the world. I urge you to take interest in history and learn from it. Even in the present context there are people like you who take pride in their skin. Think of the implications it will have in a society. I also understand that most of you guys are students and you have a long learning curve to go to understand the value of life, importance of diverse society, richness of culture in different ethnic groups.
Sometimes ethnic hatred comes out of personal feelings towards one person. Most people participating in this discussion are just fueling the ethnic hatred. This is a disgrace. All I can say is no one can save a society if the society is divided. Look at Afghanistan; different ethnic groups ruined the country. Learn from it.
I am sorry to say that you guys lack common sense and fail to acknowledge the diversity in a society. If you think of a society that has only one cast or ethnic group, this is only possible if this group is isolated from the rest of the world. Non-isolation means other ethnic group coming to the society. Do you want to live in this type of society? If you do you should dig a hole to live or find a remote island and live there... I had no clue that this site would generate such interesting discussions. I am a Latino American, born in Peru and moved to California to educate myself. I met a Nepali friend when I was in San Francisco. This was almost 10 years ago. When I first met her, I thought she was Chinese or Philipino but I had never met anyone from Nepal before so I had no idea how they looked like. It was very interesting for me to meet someone from a country I had never heard before. She was also a student and we became very good friends. In fact, she even tempted me to visit Nepal, which I did in 1993. I was a student of Anthropology in Berkeley University and this trip was probably the best vacation I ever took.
At the time, I thought Nepali people came from the same culture and ethnicity, but I soon found out that this country has more ethnic groups than you can imagine. And the most amazing thing is the harmonious relationship that existed between these different cultured people, both in faith and tradition. That’s what you call PEACE. It was not only me but many foreign nationals who visited the remote areas of Nepal felt this way.
I went into this website, sajha.com 2 weeks ago and I found many interesting links and items. However I was very much disturbed to find some people who openly disgrace their country. I do not want to mention any names here but I am sure this person will realize that he does not know what he is writing.
I did some research about the early movement of people around the Indian-subcontinent. I don’t know how valid this information is, but the Bahuns, or the Rajasthani people did migrate from north-western part of India. And I believe they were escaping from the Muslim conquerors. They were not warriors but simple landlords and priests, who were not very much respected from the local farmers from that region. They were known to be cunning, shrewd and corrupted.
The light skin features came from East Aryans who moved from eastern part of Tibet. It was also very interesting to understand why this small country, known as Nepal was not invaded. One reason was it’s topography, but many other regions around the world with similar harsh topography have been invaded in the past. It was the mountain people of Nepal everyone feared. Like I said before, the harmonious relationship between these different groups of mountain people and their strength discouraged many invaders. These mountain people were originally from Mongolia. And as you know from history that even the greatest conquerors feared the Mongolian people.
Well having said this, please remember that it’s not who were there (in Nepal) first and what language is superior or who is smarter and who is not, it is the feeling that you have towards your country that should matter the most. And I don’t think the political leaders and the Moaist are doing much for their country at this time. They seem to be more worried about their power, their regime and their own race.

i grew up in nepal surrounded by racist ideas. always, kaale people were bad. gores were good and you wanted to be fair and beautiful to get ahead. indians were the root of all problems in nepal and it was our duty as nepalis to dispise them. furthermore, marrying within your own jaat is the most improtant thing one can do. i mean, i know these are racist things but i grew up with these ideas at home, at school, and in society in general. since i've been here in the us, i've tried my hardest to get rid of these implanted thoughts but i'll tell you thhis, it's so hard. i'll still meet a dark nepali and think to myself, 'chee'; but when i see a gore one it's like that person is so special and has something for all of us to marvel at. change is going to be slow and you'll have to raise an entire generation to be tolerant of each other. i'm not sure nepal is ready for that at this stage. i hope that those of you raising kids in the us are teaching your children nepali heritage but are being careful not to propagate these racisit ideas that plague our society.

This is also true with Caucasian skinned humans and Chinese people. There must be quite a number of Nepali people who are married to Caucasian wives and I feel terribly sorry for them. I must say most of them. For some reason the Caucasian husbands seems more tolerable.
Baje must be some character somewhere in East US, who is very much disliked by the Nepali community.
He is probably someone who drinks alcohol, just to fit in the Nepali society. He has few friends, mostly non-bahuns. He feels superior that way, because he is most likely jealous or incompetent or has inferior complexity among other bahuns. I have nothing to do with nepalese problem. But I study about Nepal's history. I am from Germany and I am German.
Race division created by Bahuns in around 17th century (B.C), After Bahuns immigrate from south and west India.
Racism carried out slavery, no human right, touchable or untouchable people ( chuwa or achut ), class division (poor or rich), neglate and humiliation, division on man and woman, great cultural and political corruptions. Nepal is poor but it is nothing to do with Geographical problem, it is nothing to do with Currency or monetary. Actually, Nepal has lots of foreign currencies, lots of development projects, lot of incoming money from different source like donation and development helps. That’s way most of the development works or projects did not occur, and uncompleted. If you think development of your country, you have to figure out root of the problems and you must remove them. A teeny country located in proximity to a gargantuan country will always feel inferior. Don't the Mexicans feel that they're inferior to the US? Don't the Uzbekistanis feel they are inferior to Russia? Of course they do. We have more in common with the Indians than we do with the atheistic, self-loathing, Chinese communists. Our language -Nepali- is also derived from Sanskrit. There are millions of Nepalis living or working in India. Population movement is pretty fluid between Nepal and Indian because of open border. After all attempts, if Nepali parents can't get their sons/daughters into an American/European college, due to financial problems or any other reason that you can think of, they will naturally opt for Indian colleges. Even frigging Maoists prefer India to China! I bet you enjoy watching Hindi movies. Do you chew paan too? What's your favorite food? Daal, bhaat, tarkari?
So, yeah, the politicians have to do anything they can to maintain good relationships with India. Did you forget how many people were starving when Rajiv Gandhi instituted an embargo against Nepal???

We put so much blame on politicians and goverments for the failure of our country.
After going through this thread it is not very hard to understand why our country is the way we are. Poor and suffereing!!
It's because many of us, so called common Nepalese, still have such a sickening state of mind. We harbor such a strong sense of communalism that it's scary.
As our country goes through such a dire strait, the types of bigoted, sadistic and racist comments that I have read in this thread makes me worry about the future of our country. I think our country faces equal danger from people with this kind of mindset as we do from Maoists.
Just as the Maoists are causing physical harm, the bigoted and racist mindset like the ones here are eating the fabric of our society from inside out.
I am scared to thuink what kind of kids these people will raise. I hope most of these people will stay out of Nepal and never come back because we do not need them. No matter where they are educated, their return will do more harm than good to our country. They may not be carrying guns and bombs but they will spread the kind of mental disease that can break our society to pieces.
This has happend in Yugoslavia and other parts of the world where neighbours and friends till yesterday have killed each other because they are from different ethnicity. I hope our country will not go thorugh something similar.

Baje and Baje Basher (and some others) should get together and resolve the differences. There is not need for all of us to get involved in their pathetic fight.
Both parties that favor and hate brahmins are not willing to listen, if you notice they pick that message that has communal feelings and respond to it. Other messages that shed some light to the heart of the matter they ignore it.

The Bahuns in Nepal can be classified into three major categories.
First, they are the poor Bahuns, living in the mountain regions outside major cities. They are pretty much scattered all over the country. They basically thrive on small farming and businesses. They are hard working, selfless and liberal people. They do not have strong religious or cultural feelings like other two categories. They live simple lives and easily mingle with other ethnic groups.
The second category of Bahuns are the middle-class Bahuns. Most of them are lower level ‘Sarkari’ workers. They are poor people who come from villages and find work in government affiliated offices. They are underpaid, so they depend on bribery or ‘ghoosh’ to earn a decent living. By now they have become the ‘cockroaches’ of our society. They are no longer the hardworking, selfless and liberal people.
The third or the ‘literate’ Bahuns are the high ranking government officials. Most of them come from the middle-class category. They are the roots of corruption. They are the greediest people on Earth. They love power. They love money and they love dominance. They are the Bahuns who are stealing the common people of their livelihood. They are the maggots who are eating our country.
How can we stop this PATHETIC BEHAVIORISM?

Anyway, I would sharply disagree with their/your assessment about the 'bahuns'.
Firstly, your point that the village people are liberal and not that faithful is very very untrue but the contrary, they are superstitious, illiterate and conservative. As a matter of fact, the so-called 'bahun-oppression' may exist in the rural part of the country in way you guys have imagined. This is due to illiteracy and superstition.
The second point on the 'middle class' bahuns being the ones who are greedy, corrupt and 'roaches' of the society not only untrue but ludicrous as well. As a matter of fact, They might be the most open-minded class of the society because they emigrated from rural areas, faced hurdles and know hardship. They are also the ones who maybe the most educated bloc. Everyone in their idealistic consciences condemn taking 'bribes' because it is morally wrong. The 'bahuns' take it because they have too. This is a practical reality. I guess a morally insane person would not enjoy taking bribes. If Nepal is going downhill due to corruption then the majority of people, regardless of race, have had their hands dirtied. It is very unfair to single out a race.
Also the world is so materialistic that if anyone were to be offered money, who would not take it? I mean some wont but the majority will. Because Money talks.....Then what is the solution?
Some of you here suggest the extreme, mass genocide of Brahmins, Which is really sickening and saddening, and also very unharmonious to do. I mean would you minorities enjoy killing another person to further your agenda or enjoy being the labeled another 'nazis'? No, you probably wont. But in the spirit of our primitive constitution, I do honor your opinion (how sickening it may be) due to your the 'freedom of speech' clause. The another long solution could be to procreate more to change your status to majority. When you're in the majority and you vote you get a leader from you flock to rule you and the 'bahuns'. Then you can head the country to your liking. The third one would be to be a socially and racially united country to help eradicate the 'bahun-oppression' and corruption. The last one is quite idealistic and good to hear, isn't it? To do this, your most loyal bloc of bahuns would be the middle class because the rich wont care about you (like giraja and co.) and the poor ones are just sheep...bhahhhh.... They won’t understand. Middle class suffer as much as you do and even more due to your negativism and stereotyping. So to condemn middle class bahuns (just because of your open racism) not only hurt your agenda but also won’t make you look good.
Lastly, I do agree your point about the high-class bahuns, partly that is. I do agree they are the most selfish ones, but again who isn't? A rich non-bahun is equally corrupt and par to a bahun or even more.
PS: You are very insensitive in the use of liberal. You are interpretation it as the political opinion orientation of minority. The meaning of Liberal is progressive and open-minded. The ones who are claiming progressive sure aren't because you want to make this country bahun less, relegating to what it looked like post-shah period...chhh.chhh...not very progressive is it? My Fellow Nepali Brothers and Sisters,
I have no words to express how I feel about this particular ‘kurakani’. I grew up in Nepal, went to school in Nepal and I am here in US in search of better life. When I say better life, it’s relative. You can start a whole new discussion on this topic. But let’s not go there.
I love my country Nepal. I am proud of my culture, my heritage, my tradition and most importantly my own people. I know my country is poor. Poor in development, poor in GDP, poor in per Capita income, poor in literacy. But I can swear that my country is one of the richest countries in language, in beauty and in people. The Majestic mountains, the Beautiful hills, the endless array of rivers. My country has the most beautiful flowers and birds on the entire planet. The children in my country have the most beautiful smile. Gautam Buddha was born in Nepal. I can go on and on.
Living in US, I miss my country, my people and my family so much. I yearn to visit Nepal everyday. I dream how wonderful it would be to see my family, my old friends and see all the places I have never had a chance to visit.
I know my ‘JAAT’ might be different from yours, my religion different from yours, my culture and heritage different from yours. But I am a Nepali and you are a Nepali, we are brothers, we are sisters. We belong to each other. We grew up, playing and crying on the same ‘MATO’. We take pride in being Nepali.
Why are we fighting and discussing with each other about our ethnicity?
Let’s discuss about things that will help build our country into an economically sound country. Lets’ discuss how we can improve our schools. Let’s talk about how we can educate our children and women and the drunken men who beat their wives every night. Let’s find a solution on how we can eliminate poverty and child trafficking. Let’s discuss how we can improve the quality of life in Nepal.
If we keep on fighting about who we are, where we came from and who is superior and who is right and who is wrong. We will all lose.
So friends be open, be supportive, be kind to one another. Let’s give each other opportunity to understand and learn from each other. We have to be united. We have to find a solution to end the current crisis in Nepal. We have to do it. Otherwise who else will?

Being a Gurung, I must say that I hate myself. Why was I born a dumb Gurung? I have no culture, no script, no nothing. Is this life worth living? I just wish I was born a superior bahun. I don't know many things but I know from my heart.
Kathmandu Valley is the most cultivate land in whole country Nepal. When Newars were in kathmandu. We had enough land to grow food, clean place to live, less crime, and the most is there were no corruption. Everybody were happy. When Bahuns entered kathmandu, they took away everything from us land, job, health, wealth, and start corruption. They sell nepal's river to India and we do not have drinking water. Nepal is the land of water but we do not have drinking water. I have golden fuset at home but no water. Bahuns sell drinking water thru tanker but they do not want water projects in kathmandu. Because, if everybody have well drinking water at home, nobody will buy water from Bahuns' tanker. one tanker's cost of water RS 4000. So Bahus by propously reject all water projects and plans. So now, Bahus are ready to take your Life, too.......
