Devotees of the Jainism religion in India have held naked processions to celebrate the birthday of its founder. They shed their clothes for the festival to demonstrate their belief in the value of abstinence and austerity.Jainism is an offshoot of Hinduism found by Lord Mahavir in the sixth century BC.Mahavir preached a message of non-violence,self-sacrifice and love to the world and nature. He is considered to have become a god by attaining a state of perfection through meditation and self-realisation - a process which included a vow of silence which lasted years. Mahavir is said to have spent the next 30 years travelling on bare feet around India preaching to people and attracted people from all walks of life.
