Nepal's Maoist rebels kill at least 104 soldiers, police in counterattacks

ASSOCIATED PRESS

KATMANDU, Nepal, May 7 — Retaliating against a massive military offensive, rebels launched simultaneous attacks Wednesday across Nepal, killing at least 104 soldiers and police officers and losing 14 of their own, the army said.

More than 100 soldiers and police were killed in the remote western village of Gam, where about 500 Maoist guerrillas surrounded a joint army-police base late Tuesday, a senior officer of the Royal Nepalese Army told The Associated Press.
The death toll could not be independently confirmed, since journalists and human rights groups have not been allowed into the areas of fighting.
Gam is a stronghold of Maoist insurgents who have been fighting to topple Nepal's constitutional monarchy since 1996.
Army helicopters ferried soldiers to Gam after dawn Wednesday to try to help the trapped forces. The helicopters were not able to land, however, due to bad weather, the officer said.
While the fighting raged Tuesday night, Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and President Bush met in Washington to discuss U.S. aid for Nepal. The Bush administration recently asked Congress for $20 million in non-combat assistance for Nepal.
''Nepal is fighting a Maoist rebellion, and Nepal is an example, again, of a democracy, and the United States is committed to helping Nepal,'' White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said Tuesday.
The Maoist attacks were a response to an air and land assault on a suspected guerrilla training camp in the Rolpa district, where Gam is located, 180 miles west of Katmandu. It was the largest assault by security forces in six years of fighting.
Also Wednesday, the army said it had regained control of a police camp seized by the guerrillas in the town of Chainpur, about 240 miles east of Katmandu.
Four police officers were killed there, and soldiers recovered 14 rebel bodies, it said.
The army said Wednesday that more than 410 rebels have been killed since Thursday, though other government officials have offered higher numbers. No civilians deaths have been reported, but the death toll could not be confirmed.
The Nepalese government imposed a state of emergency in November that allowed the army for the first time to join police in fighting the rebels, who follow the doctrines of Chinese revolutionary Mao Zedong.
Nepal's army has participated in international peacekeeping operations but has never fought in an internal conflict.
The recruitment of thousands of new soldiers began Tuesday at the Pattan military base in the capital. About 5,000 recruits were undergoing training, army officials said.

Here is a Nepali named Shanti (Peace)

Killings are going on in Nepal. Ministers are going to beg for money. How amazing is it? You can depict now what Nepal is now.

No one has to feel proud being "Gorkhali". It is outdated.

Maoist can not defeat army. Can army defeat Maoist? Not sure. It means war is ahead for few years in Nepal.

Let me see, what terrorism means. US and Israel may define precisely on it, but Nepal can not define it precisely because Maoists have their legitimate political path and demand. They are Nepalese too. How can you say them terrorist? Aren't our government terrorist? Yes, they are.

I remember one incident that was happen in my village at night at Panchayet regime in 2038 Bikram Sambat. At that time, I was a young and I just could understand the "Nara Haru" for example, Panchayet Murdabad, Bahudal Gindabad, Dhero Laddo Khha, etc. Poeple were on the way of boycott of "Nirbachan" in 2038. My villagers did not participate in the Nirbachan, and they were called "Atank Badi". Then, on the election mid night, thousands of Army captured my village near kirtipur town and army and policemen arrested hundreds of innocent people, who were Dakarmi, Sikarmi, Kisan, Nirachhar Janata. Some of them were killed and some of them became disable. Was not those police and army person human? Why did they kill innocent people in my village? God, my father did not see even sun light for five days after that incident. Why were the army and police "Bheda" and wanted to kill innocent people? So, at that time, my father was arrested, we all the siblings had to starve and die. Finally, I would become a Maoist. I would ready to die for being a so called Maoist. It is just a remembrance. Now, I do not have to be Maoist and I reside in Amrika.

Shanti...

Shanti,

You need to follow the path of virtue, the path of knowledge and should not choose a political belief based on one bad incident.

I am really sorry that you and your dad had to suffer. I was also in Nepal during that time but I have good memories.

Do you want to believe in an ideology that has proven to be a fallacy? If there is some hope for Nepal it is through democracy not through communism! You should understand that democracy is not very effective until people realize the importance of a ballot and choosing a right candidate. This might take a while to happen, but it WILL have to HAPPEN.

Sorry again as a Nepali person that you had to suffer during the election times.

hello shanti,
i read numerous stories like yours all day today in the internet and i am over whelmed by this feeling of helplessness. i am in Hamrica too and as a student my life is comfortable and secure here at least in a material sense. but the reality of the thousands of people in nepal who at this moment are perhaps dying, being tortured, living in fear, running, hiding, starving is heart breaking. HOW are you all dealing with this? Is there REALLY nothing we can do?
Shanti Posted on 08-May-02 11:48 PM

hi nepalichora,

I am not talking about political ideology. I do not care about the political ideology as long as people have their civil rights and as long as they can access education, health care, and can possess a shelter.

I am talking about barbarism in Nepal in different period of regime. I had to suffer in 2038, my villagers had to die in 2038 without doing any harm to the authority. Was not that terror?

People were terrorized in Dang by Khum Bahadur and his Jadtha. He had killed during election in his town in Dang. Was not that terror? I am not defending for Maoist and I do not trust them ether.

Shanti.........

I understand your pain, frustration and feeling of lawlessness. If I could I would fight for you but this is not the issue.

I made those statements after reading your entire statement. In your statement you said, ".. because Maoists have their legitimate political path and demand.." These are the types of statement I have problem with. How can you call a maobadi demands legitimate?? They want to kill the king and be the supreme power! They want to eliminate all the people that do not believe in their ideology. Do you know how many people Mao killed during the revolution?

I am not against you, I am just trying to say that why do you empathize with the maobadis? Just because you are frustrated with the government is not enough justification for your empathy towards maobadis.

I am also a victim of government corruption but I understand that we have to grow through it. I left Nepal because of frustration just like yours but I am not against the democracy nor I support maobadis.

It is interesting to see that you and I have the similar experiences but two different opinions. It is interesting. Don’t you think?

That's all I have to say.

Good night for now. I have a long day tomorrow.
