Want to make a teeny tiny difference in 60 seconds, without leaving your computer? This would be a good time to write the White House, comment on Deuba's visit, and share your thoughts about US aid to Nepal.

Do you think that military aid and intelligence assistance would be money well spent? Do you fear that Nepal could become another Afghanistan? Do you suspect that Georgie might need a little help in figuring out where Nepal is?

Let the White House know what you think. It doesn't need to be a long letter--it's not like he actually reads it--but the more emails the White House gets, the better. He may not read 'em, but his people count 'em.

If you're a US citizen and a voter, do mention that, and include your name and address.

The email is president@whitehouse.gov

yeah, let's accentuate the negative. better yet, why not go to the meeting this evening with deuba and make some snide, smart-ass crack about his name to his face? ask him how much of the $20 million he and arju are going to skim right off the top for themselves. see how far THAT gets you. for folks who want to do a little more than plop yet another useless e-mail on the cyber-south lawn of 1600 pennsylvania ave., it's much more likely to have impact if people contact the folks in congressional committees and subcommittees who will be considering the $20 million supplemental appropriations request. do a little research--it is so easy.

Of course, writing congress members is also a reasonably satisfying way to invest 60 seconds of your time. Particularly if you live and vote in their districts.

OK. Maybe writing Bush is useless, maybe writing Congress is useless, maybe we'd all be better off meditating on crystals for world peace, but hey, it can't hurt. No reason to be so bitter about "useless cyberplops," Better Yet. Send 'em or don't.

Btw, if anyone runs into the name of the appropriations bill and any info on what committee it's in right now, do share it.

It occurs to me, too, that every university worth it's salt has at least one lobbyist on staff these days to track education issues, lobby for whatever it determines to be useful, and so on. I wonder if HMG employs such a person; my impression is no. I bet the govt of India uses a lobbying firm.

This just occured to me. I don't think anything can be skimmed off the proposed $20 million, because as I understand it, this would come in the form of military hardware, not in the form of cash.

Such is my recollection, but I'm open to correction. That's one reason I'd like to see the details of the proposed bill, if anyone has a link.
Biswo Posted on 08-May-02 02:59 PM

Since US already gives 33 million per year in other aids, they must have some
mechanism to monitor their spending in Nepal.

Anyway, military aid is supposed to be hardware, and that too non-lethal weapon.
So the possiblity of creating gluttony of arms in the kingdom is probably less likely
in current situation.

But I wrote a letter to the white house, in deed, it was a few-words-long letter,
but they replied with a very long automated email response. Funny.
