It wasn’t until I came to the US that I developed a keen interest in old/classic Nepali songs (oh well, they say “najik ko tirtha helaa”) Besides, those days I was more into Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle, R.D Burman and songs like “kabhie kabhie mere dil mein”, “chura liya hain tumne jo dil ko”, “aap jaisa koi mere zindagi”, “chaundavi ka chaand ho” would always linger in my vocal chords. Then I met this person one day who not only mesmerized me with his gifted voice, but also inspired me to dig into these absolutely amazing nepali songs that I had never heard before. Those days I was only familiar with the voice of the legend Narayan Gopal. So I asked this person who these phenomenal singers behind the melodious songs were, to which he named a few singers such as Deep Shrestha, Arun Thapa, Ghulam Ali, Bhakta Raj Acharya, Prem Dhoj Pradhan, Naati Kaji, Deepak Kharel etc. I even didn’t know that Udit Narayan had sung many beautiful Nepali songs! Anyways as time passed by I began to realize that it wasn’t just the “laya”, the “taal” in the music that created the essence in the songs, but the “lyrics” often made a great impact. I also realized that unlike most of the contemporary nepali songs that have redundant themes and words such as “maya”, “mayalu” “mayapriti” “priyasi” that become a bit monotonous, songs of those golden eras are filled with such poetic, captivating and gripping lyrics that one cannot help but wonder at how the lyricists came up with such meaningful lines. I just wanted to share with you all some of the “golden lyrics” that I have really liked among the songs of yesteryears. Again, I do not know the writers and the singers behind these songs but here I list them in random order of personal favorites. And I would love to know what lyrics you have personally enjoyed, lyrics that will never fade away……..
1. timi sanga dunga ma ghumda ghumdai phewa taal, nasodha kasto bhayo hola mero dil ko haal….
2. sundar muhaar timro, chandrama sharmaune, ek palta dekhna payein, chaahena arko kehi…..
3. raat sunsaan bhaisakeko thiyo, joon bilayera gaisake ko thiyo bistarai hindeko kohi saath ma timilai dekhera aankha tyahin chodi hidein ma….
4. icchya ko sagar poudera rahen swapnako sansaar, jaanu cha dherai, pugnu cha tyahan, baato cha hajaar…
5. timi taadhaa hunchou jati, tyeti dherai mera bainsa haru aatidinchan, timi najikai
hunchau jati, tyeti dherai mera yovan haru maati dinchan…
6. sanjha ko joon sangai, aaunchau timi bhanera, tolai rahanchu aakash ma, raat ko tara ganera
7. ganjalu ti thula thula ankha teer bani basyo you dilai ma
8. ukaali oraali haru ma, bhanjyang….chautari haruma, jahan jahan janchau timi, ma paila bani pachhyai rahanchu…
9. yeti dherai maanis ka yeti dherai aankha haru, malai bhane timrai aankha roju roju laagcha hai roju roju laagcha….
10. here’s a new one I like, “laako maya laina nabhana, thaha patto paina nabhana, bipani ma haasein pani sapani ma runchu, aunlaa haru choomi hera, ma ta tyetai hunchu…

Those four songs of Raja Mahendra that Ghulam Ali sang are absolute classics.

Another oldie I personally identify with:
Mailey jiwan lai kasari sajaye....
Although I shudder at the name of Le Pen, I do think there are many similarities in old french songs and nepali songs. Hopelessly romantic songs :). Ahhhhhhhhh LOVE!

The other day, I caught myself humming this old song by Aruna Lama..I was and still am a big fan of Aruna Lama..
Ma ankhai ma rakhiney yogya kaha chu
Malai samjhi tithyauna yogya kaha chu
Ma bhul hun sudhariney yogya kaha chu..
.....
dukha ko udaharan mero jeevan haina?
khushi ma ke mero adhikar nai chaina ?

was thinking, who ever wrote this song, what was going through his/her mind to write such a self-deprecating song...
But then there was a time when I could absolutely identify with this song. So I guess I know..

One of my fav nepali songs: timi sanga dunga maa ghumda ghumdai phewa taal, nasodha kasto bhayo hola mero dil ko haal....
very romantic..
BTW i think i know u and those guys you were talking about in that Lalima section, though i wasnt there myself!! seems like the guys from by batch!!!

I think you are mistaken.
'Timlai dekhera paila tyahi chhodi hinde ma' is sung by Udit Narayan. I'm 100% sure on that. I have a copy of that song...

Some things just stand out don't they??
Anyway, before we digress any further, my last point on this tangent, I do agree with you about universities fast becoming sweatshops (just my opinion) after a friend of mine became an assistant prof ki key after slogging to finish his ph.d only to make less than an executive assistant. But then one has to weigh options, do I want 3 months off a year and become the oh-so-learned person, or do I say to hell with the 3 months off and do something entirely different and go towards making more $$$.
But in general I am of the opinion that one should be doing a Ph.d. if it makes a difference in the field, if its a major break through! But then, what do I know!!!
And to add to the thread:
I think yeti dherai maya diye is a positive romantic song :). At least I identify with it as being positive. Any thoughts?
