was wondering if i could get any work without the "social security card" . possible?
surya Posted on 16-May-02 09:26 AM

If you lived in DC area or Newyork and dont forget you get exploited for that. People who employ you are going to take the fullest advantage, make you work 70 hours a week with little pay...

sure, you could--but would you? is this yet another example of sajha.com being used as a forum to exchange tips on how to violate u.s. law? it would be a real pity to lose this site due to a "few" bad apples...

of course, one can also assume that "ss" is equally willing to do the legal, honest thing by applying for a new or replacement s.s. card.

FYI, "what the", majority of the students who are pursuing their education in the states, WORK AND STUDY. Few, if any students( Nepalese) have their folks back home paying for their college degree , thus leaving them with the easy alternative, that being "work your ass off" (illegally of course) and earn enough to pay for the tution . I would not go into numbers and facts , but I can assure you that MAJORITY of the college goers(nepalese) resort to working illegally in states, to earn for their college fees. I would suspect even you work to pay for your fees lest you be a dhani bauko chora/chori or you fed the folks in the international students office in your campus with lies and recieved your working permit.
Finally, if I am not mistaken international students are not allowed to work off campus unless they have the required permission to, even if they have social security.

you haven't FYI-ed me of anything i did already know. not that it's any beeswax of yours, but i did pay for most of my own undergrad and grad education. the difference between me and the "majority" to whom you refer is that i did it legally. also, what makes you assume i had to deal at all with any int'l student office? maybe you should read the recent reports about new int'l student tracking policies here in amrika. anyhow, you pays your money, you takes your chances. have fun looking over your shoulder all the time...

I would suggest to everybody to DONOT discuss this kind of Topic here. This can be discussed personnally or group wise outside this forum. The reason is, anybody can register in this website with any name. Nobody knows who they are? If somebody or secret service, just assuming now, want to find how Nepelease people are doing, working and surviving in USA? this could lead to wrong way. The bottom line is, even the person who put topic here now, may not be his/her bad intension or purpose. However, this is just caution or warning to everybody for any bad outcome in future!!!

Additionally, the website can be searchable from any search engine by any value or word. So Putting full name of "S.S" which is mentioned in question (First line), could turn up to everywhere or anywhere. So, just caution on it.

maha m,

are you saying let's all sweep this under the rug and only address the issue covertly, lest the department of justice sees what's going on? you make some good points about possible risks, and i think burying heads in the sand leaves people's behinds exposed. in reality, it's already too late for a lot of nepalis in the u.s., and i think it is really foolish to maintain the status quo on this issue, especially given congress has decided to split the immigration and naturalization service in two--one branch for service, one for enforcement. my prediction is that slipping through the cracks because of the bogus excuse "everybody does it" is going to be much harder.

After all we are Gorkhes, aren't we?

When you talk about some legal or illegal stuffs about the gore land then everybody is so scared. Want to talk secretly not openly.

However when

1) Somebody talked about how to cheat in our motherland's Tribhuvan Intn'l airport custom office, everbody talked freely.
2) Somebody is illegally putting all the nepali songs on the web hurting nepali singers and very baby nepali recording industry. Nobody cares about it and was discussed freely how to download free.

Well these are the two discussions thread that I remember on top of my head. If anybody remembers anything that we discussed illegal stuff here please list it.

Whether are Gurkhes or Hurkules, it is high risk for every body. Whether you people knew same kind of this case happened in Boston and in NY a year ago. Do you know or not? It is better to take precaution than loosing later and blame somebody. Two event of this (ss) had already been happened and more than dozens nepalese were arrested and dozens of nepalese were fled to the next state cause of this. So, they didn't realized that time they were Gurkhes and Hurkules. Many were without ss and many were had .... So you can't predict the accident and problem where it comes from.

I am just caution on it. Abiding and following is soley on you guys.

There is a ukhan in Nepali, "Bhir batta khaseko goru lai ram nam matra bhanna sakchha"
