"Poverty and faster growth in population than food production are the main reasons for the increase in hunger in Nepal, where the per capita dietary energy supply declined below the sub-regional average," the UN agency said. Nepal's population is 23.15 million. In South Asia, only Pakistan and Sri Lanka improved their anti-hunger performance in terms on reduction of both absolute numbers and percentage of undernourished people during 1997-99. The FAO's latest global food insecurity survey says the Asia, Pacific region has two-thirds of the 780 million undernourished people in the developing world. A meeting of senior government officers from 40 Asia-Pacific countries is currently reviewing the state of food security in the region and discussing ways to speed up hunger reduction. nepalnews.com br May 15
