Hi all, Just a short note to offer words of congratulations to Dilli Bhadaur Chaudhary, president of Dang-based Backward Society Education (BASE) on his organization's being awarded the prestigious British Anti-Slavery Award for the year 2002. The award given each year by UK human rights organisation Anti-Slavery International. Dilli, his colleagues and his organization have been honored for their tireless work on behalf of the kamaiyas (bonded Tharu agricultural laborers) since 1990, culminating in the emancipation of kamaiyas from decades-old debt bondage. Doing good work in Nepal is extremely difficult; you make lots of enemies (government officers, local officers and friends who turn against you, and so on) who are always ready to sniff and snort at and about you. Hats of Dilli and friends for never wavering from their dedication to do what they can help up to 200,000 dirt-poor Nepalis live a life dignity and freedom. oohi ashu ktm, nepal
