Let us recognize individuals for their unfathomable impact on Nepalese community I would like to start this thread by presenting honorary lifetime achievement awards to the following individuals and organizations. Please feel free to comment and contribute with your own list of people and organizations. 1) Mrs. Anuradha Koirala of Maiti Nepal (www.maitinepal.org). Maiti Nepal has been awarded the prestigious "World Children's Prize 2002" in recognition of its fight against trafficking of Nepali girls and women. John Ward Anderson of Washington Post in his article “The crusader behind Maiti Nepal: Mrs. Koirala Girl-Trafficking Meets a Determined Roadblock” writes “…She started by making personal loans of 1,000 rupees ($20) to nine female beggars and prostitutes in Kathmandu so they could set up stalls to sell vegetables, cigarettes and candies--and, she hoped, reshape their lives…” 2) Shrawan Nepali of Ama Foundation (www.ama-foundation.org) from Berkeley, California “After 16 years in the United States, an MBA degree and a successful career as a financial controller, Shrawan decided to change his career to full time social worker. He sold his house in Berkeley and committed funds to establish the Ama Foundation dedicating his life to the care of poor and underprivileged children.” “In August of 2001, with the help of Ama and a local social worker Shekhar Silwal, Shrawan opened Ama Ghar or "Motherly Home" in the Godavari area of Kathmandu Valley. Ama Ghar now accommodates fourteen wonderful children, two housemothers and one tutor in a 4-story building with garden and play area. “ 3) Sir Edmund Hillary (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/everest/history/) – whose courage did not end on the 11:30 morning of 29th May, 1953 when he scaled Mount Everest with Tenzing Norgay but was a mere beginning. He has been a positive force for the betterment of the Nepalese people as well as an outspoken advocate and spokesman for environmental causes since then. He is the founder and leader of several Foundations dedicated to improving the social and physical conditions of the Nepalese people, especially Sherpa community. He has succeeded in building schools, hospitals and infrastructure in the Everest area. 4) Help Nepal UK – for starting pound a month drive for noble cause in Nepal (www.helpnepal.co.uk) ”Help Nepal Network (HeNN) was established in 1999 with the goal to encourage every working Nepali throughout the world to contribute to Nepal, though in a modest way. It seeks from all working members of the Nepalese community, and all others with an interest to Nepal, a donation of at least £1 per month for the noble cause to extending help in the fields of health and education in remote areas of Nepal. Funds may also be directed towards emergency disaster relief efforts. The fund-raising efforts have already generated nearly £9,000 from which the construction of a science lab and a library building in Dunai, Dolpa and a school building in Pyuthan have been completed. HeNN's Nepal Co-ordinating Committee implements and supervises the works undertaken.”
