Hi everyone,

For the last three months, some of us -- definite NON-sahitya-kaars (i.e. management consultants, bankers, travel agents, students, managers, etc!)-- in Kathmandu have been running a monthly discussion program on well-known 'classic ' or contemporary Nepali-language novels.

We want to read Nepali literature at the rate of one book
a month because we think that just like economics or
anthropology, literature too has something to teach us to understand Nepal better, even though our formal education
was NEVER on/about literature as such.

And so, the idea is: We would read one particular Nepali novel
a month, and come together one evening to discuss our impressions/findings and share criticisms. The point is to
have ordinary, non-sahitya-kaar readers speak up their minds. Discussions would take place at Martin Chautari at Thapa Thali, and be open to all at no charge.

Our discussions so far have gone very well, attracting writers such as Khagendra Sangraula, C K Lal, Manjul, Bimal Nibha,
Narayan Dhakal, Manjushree Thapa and many, many more. Our discussions have been heated, passionate and always fun.

The books we have discussed so far are:

a) Parijat's "Sirish ko ful". (December)
b) Indra Bahadur Rai's "Aja Ramita Cha" (January)
c) B P Koirala's "Narendra Dai" (February)

Later this month, we'll be discussing Saru Bhakta's "pagal basti".
Saru Bhakta is a writer based in Pokhara.

If any of you know anything about this book and Saru Bhakta,
please share your thoughts. I will be reading the book
later this week-end. It would be nice to get occasional discussions about Nepali sahitya going here as well.

Literature too helps us understand the complexities of our
societies better.
