Reader Nath ji, You have raised a valid concern. Let me explain why this contest is the way it is. In this contest, poems are judged based on poet's presentation style in addition to other regular criteria. Poets recite their poems in front of about 5-7 judges, judges give mark right after each recitation and winners are instantly announced at the end of the program. As you can see, this annual poetry contest at the ANA convention is geared toward convention participants. Since we have limited time, we can not allow more than 20 poems on the contest. It has been working this way for last 5/6 years except on the Atlanta convention. I will forward your suggestion to INLS and ANA so that they can think about expanding the scope of the contest in the future. Thank you for your advice. For everyone who are discouraged /disappointed for not being able to participate on this contest, INLS in DC does conduct a larger scale "International Nepali Poetry Competition" every year and results are usually announced around Bhanu Jayanti and wining poems are published in a literary magazine called "INSIGHT". The submission deadline for International Nepali Poetry Competition 2001 has already been passed but interested person can submit entries for 2002. Here is a sample announcement of last year: International Nepali Poetry Competition 2001 ------------------------------------------------------- International Nepali Literary Society announces following literary award for this year’s poetry competition: Subject: Any; Length: Less than 100 word or thirty lines; Language: Nepali; Award: 1st - $150.00, 2nd - $100.00, 3rd - $ 50.00; The winners will be invited to present their poems during INLS 12th general assembly meeting; Release Date: April 1st, 2002; Submission: Accepted from anywhere in the world; Format: Electronic file, typed paper or handwritten. Due Date: The entry poems must arrive at INLS office by February 29th, 2002. Participation: Everybody is eligible, and encouraged for participation in the competition except the members of judging committee and the President of INLS. Hope this helps. -Puru
