Thanks to the Web master San Pradhan for re-arranging my various kamaiya-related pieces here on the "kura kani" screen. They look much more organized now. Thanks, San bro!! The government of Nepal has constituted a high-level commission to take care of the freed kamaiyas. Taking care means: providing immediate relief (such as food and medicines) to them, as well as giving out land and so on. Rehabilitating the Kamaiyas thus will take some time -- months and years, and, to that end, most NGOs and human rights organizations will be busy. The official minimum hourly wage in Nepal (in the agricultural sector) is: Rs. 7.50/hr or Rs. 60 for per 8-hour-work days. Now, the Kamaiyas are free, their problems are similar to those of most other FREE Nepalis who too are mired in poverty, illiteracy, landlessness, and are ill-skilled. Thus much work for many years remains to be done by all who care -- closely or distantly -- about this frustrating yet wonderful country between Tibet and India. oohi ashu
