I recently read abuot Ms. Durga Pokharel, head of some commission for women in Nepal. In that article a scenerio is quoted. The scenerio is something like this; there was this family comprised of husband, wife and a (?) child in western nepal. Husband died. Compensation/insurance money was paid to the parents of the dead guy instead of dead man's wife because the office that paid the compensation thought the wife is still young and could elope with another person. Ms. Durga Pokharel protested this saying it's none of the offices' business whether the widow will elope with someone or not. Finally, the widow was paid the amount. Who does a husband belong to? Parents or the wife? Let's say (just assume), the wife indeed remarries with someone of her choice and vanishes with the money with her new found lover. The parents will be left out in the dark with no son , no buhari, and no money. Buhari got both- money and a husband. Dead son of the Parents can't remarry. So, what the parents are getting? I am not talking about who the primary beneficiary was? the article probably does not talk on that. My point is whom does a man belong to?

Who ever the husband chooses to be.If he does not have a will then what ever the law states.Again nothing is perfect so you can not keep everybody happy.

I think the money should go to the wife because she has a child to raise, she definitely needs the money to feed herself and their child. And the question of whom the husband belongs to, I personally think that he is not a property thus he belongs to nobody but himself.

DID NOT SIMILAR SITUATION AROSE WHEN ONE OF THE PILOTS OF NECON AIR DIED IN A CRASH AND THE QUESTION ABOUT THE INSURANCE MONEY WAS TO BE TAKEN TO THE COURT? AND THE COURT WAS IN FAVOR OF THE WIFE THAN THE PARENTS.

A man belongs to his wife. That is what marriage is all about. It is a sacred (well leave this adjective if you can do without), mutual (two way) and active contract for belonging to each other and sharing everything. There is a natural bond between parents and children, but it is not a result of two-way contract between parents and the child. Children are by-product of sexual pleasure of parents and infants do not conciously make contract with parents to bear the obligation of responsibility. Marriage is what does so. Therefore a man belongs to his wife. Parents only long to belong. That's all.

I am not interested in knowing what laws say about who should claim the should a married man die. Obviously, a person is not property. I am aware of that. When I said whom does a man belong to, I didn't mean in any monetary sense. You guys are all free, I hope, but don't you feel like you belong to someone or someone belongs to you?
