It has been a year since king Birendra was slain by his son. The son , Dipendra, was an addict, who occasionally expressed disdain for democracy too if rumours were to be believed, and a capricious prince. He killed Birendra with one of the most sophisticated rifles available, his shots crushed the skulls of queen Aishwarya, and he eventually shot himself. But , what I see now, is a gross attempt to misconstrue that incident. Everybody who is writing obituary/memory is criticizing leaders of multiparty democracy when remembering the king. Even Tara Bdr Thapa is doing that. Tomorrow, probably Sachin Samsher Thapa will do that. These dudes will even start bashing the whole multiparty democracy one day. These people are cowards. These people don't have any idea, and the only thing they harbor is the grudge against new system, in which people can line up to cast their vote and create a powerful government. These people don't know what a broad liberal society needs to be. They are terrified at the new developments, these people are vertiginious to see people actively participating in elections, and even in their old age, they want to dismantle this system. The groundswell of public support for late king has been their one major weapon and they want to manipulate it. Republicans consist of a major chunk of our population, whether we like them or not. And Nepal's future is only in a tolerant and inclusive Nepal. Being republican is not a shame. I support a constitutional monarchy, not a monarchy that supports the elements whose lifelong goal is to undermine democracy, and I can only dismiss the low standard obituaries like the one written by king's former assistant in the recent "Nepal". These people, we all know, never loved multiparty democracy. What the massacre of last year taught us was this: it taught us that monarchy wasn't safe at the hands of some narrow minded generals of Narayanhiti palace, monarchy wasn't safe at the hands of dullard and maniac princes, and that monarchy needs to be at the scrutiny of people. It is not democracy that will be at risk at the hands of Dipendra, Paras or Dhirendra. Nobody could crush the will of people. It is monarchy that needs safety measures. Because monarchy without principle is an obsolte institution. We again have the same opaque structure at the palace,we again have a maniac prince,we again have impuissant leaders who cower at the sight of king, and we again have multitudes of toadeaters here and there who would do everything to misguide monarchy for their personal benefits.By targetting at wrong people , even in the annual memory day of the late king, these dull minded people have misfired at people and their right. They don't know that plethora of opinions, diversity of life, and freedom of expression are the most prized development of human civilization and Nepali people will keep on enjoying it. --- I would like to mention this famous quotation again: "King , save me from your followers."

Biswo, Welcome back. Honest, compact, and effective. A knock-out. Those dullards and cowards and yes the "toadeaters" are a bunch of laughing stock. Go ahead eulogize the dead king (nothing wrong with that), but why breathe fire against the infant democracy???

Dear Paschim, NK and Nepeji: Thanks, as always, for your kind words. I am glad that our opinion converges on this issue. I loved king Birendra very much. But he was not a god, and he comitted a lot of mistakes. We will be better if we try to identify those mistakes, and safeguard against such mistakes. But we will not be better if we let some toadeaters use the memory of the late king for their personal benefits. We know who these people who wrote eulogy for king Birendra simulateously insinuating that the whole present system is useless. They try to separate king Birendra from the democratic system of present Nepal. Yes, King was an autocrat and he probably loved Panchayat more, but yet he decided to yield to popular pressure in 2046, and didn't overreach his authority until his death. In other words, he became a very good democrat a lot of us democrat can be proud of. A man is made up of mistakes and virtues. If his virtues outweigh his mistakes, I think he is successful. King Birendra, if judged by his last decade of throne, was definitely a succesful king. May his soul be in peace.
