HELP NEPAL International Fund Raising Day

HELP NEPAL Network, a charity of Nepalese living in different parts of the world, organised a HELP NEPAL Day simultaneously in the UK, Australia, Italy and Nepal over the weekend, raising over £2,000 for future projects of the organisation.

About 120 Nepalese gathered at the Doren Bazeel Hall in Central London to participate in a dinner and dance party, sponsored by Primus Telecommunications, UK, and in Kathmandu 300 guests attended a cultural function on Saturday at Hotel Raddison. On the same occasion £1,500 was also handed over to the authorities of Chanaute Primary School, Lunkhu Garedi, Danda in Parbat for the construction of classrooms. Also on Saturday, a lunch-cum-seminar was held in Victoria, Australia, to promote the cause of the Network. Similarly, a small get together of Nepalese was organised in Italy.

Established in late 1999 with the aim of encouraging Nepalese around the world to contribute to Nepal, HELP NEPAL Network is currently operating in ten countries and has generated about £19,000 (Nineteen thousand pounds) for charitable causes in Nepal. It has helped build schools and libraries in remote districts like Dolpa, Dang and Pyuthan and has organised health camps in Chitwan and Kathmandu. (Details about the Network's activities can be found in its website at www.helpnepal.net)

Julie Basnet, the co-ordinator of HELP NEPAL International Fund Raising Day, said the Network intended to mark the Day in as many countries as possible in the coming years. She said the Day was not all about raising money but generating a sense of contribution to Nepal among the Nepalese. She added that since Nepal has been going through its most difficult time in history, it has been even more important for Nepalese around the world to make a positive contribution towards their homeland.

Great job, Rabindra. From fighting Baburam Bhattarai in the newspapers (didn't he single you out last month and call you an "arrogant frog", hence proving how much of your writing is blunting his propaganda) to raising money to re-build the very schools and libraries that he has sought to destroy in places like Pyuthan and Dolpa, you are doing great work. Kaam badhi, halla kam. Really proud of you and your creation, Help Nepal. I have supported monetarily and morally your cause in the past. Will continue to do so.

But where's that slogan, "one pound a month for Nepal". That was a very compelling line to use to solicit support from Nepalis abroad, including most of us here on Sajha.

Hello Rabindra-ji,

Great job with this HN thing.
Read about your work on the front-page of Kantipur daily this morning.

Aru ke cha haal-khabar?

Read a nasty attack against you in Nepal magazine's letter section recently.
What was that all about?

Keep up the good work on HN, though.

My sincere thanks to Manasalu, Paschim and Ashu for the encouraging words. Yes, Ashu, I heard there was strong attack on me in the letters section of Nepal magazine. But then I thought if journalists think it’s there ‘prerogative’ to criticise about things that they consider appropriate, why shouldn’t others do the same? Having said that, I found the letter a bit unnecessarily personal.
And, Paschim, the slogal ‘ONE POUND A MONTH FUND FOR NEPAL’ is still there. I encourage Sajha visitors to visit our website at www.helpnepal.net to find out more about it. Comments and suggestions on the HELP NEPAL campaign would be highly appreciated. It is all about making things happen in Nepal, so I am sure you all will find it interesting.
