Do you guys ever mishear words in songs and then one day when your listening to the song you finally understand the true meaning of the word and then the whole song makes perfect sense. I've had this experience many times.

for example the song "kati baschou odi laaj ko ghumto man ma palayeka rahar lai chopi". For the longest time i thought the singer was saying "odilas ko ghumto" and not "odi laaj ko ghumto". i figured since he was talking about ghumto , "odilas" was some kind of fabric or something. then only few years ago i found out that he was saying "odi laaj ko ghumto". this was a great revelation to me.

then there is "parkhi base aunla vani mero uthane palo" by narayan gopal. i thought he was sying "mero oot(lips) nepalo" insted of "uthane palo". and i used to wonder what he meant my "oot nepalo". i thought he was being patriotic and saying "oot nepalo". even his lips are nepali. that was the best explanation that i could come up with then. this was when i was like 12. then later someone told me he was saying "uthane palo"

then there was "malai nasodha kaha dhukcha ghaoo". there is a line where narayan gopal sings "mero ghaoo timi nahase po dukcha." i thought he was saying "mero ghaoo timi nahase ko jutta(shoes)" and i used to wonder how jutta fit into the song. for the longest time i made myself belive that he was indeed saying "ko jutta" for i did not know any better and nobody ever explained it to me. again, this was when i was around 11. then finally one day i did hear "po dukcha" and everything made sense.

when i think back, it makes me laugh.those little things in life. have you guys had similar experience? would like to hear your stories.

Dear Suman,, hmmm ur experience goes parallel to mine. Although i had several mis hearings in the past, its hard to recall. But now i am having one. I am busy writing my thesis script and lke to hear some melodous songs from homeland. I feel so cozy and warm to hear those soft songs from Nepal and it makes me feel as if i am in home country. The song,,,by Madam krishna shreshta,,,hawa chalyoo paat halyoo,, has some lyric which is confusing me. lets hope soon i can figure out the meaning of that part. I wonder why this part is becoming so difficult to comprehend,, its more difficult than the differenc crazy and sophisticated laws of chemistry for which i made a great exam yesterday.

The song Gairi Khet ko, from the film Prem Pinda,
I used to hear Usko rupko daraundi le instead of karaunti le...
&
.... kira paryo instead of chira paryo.
That's all I remember for now.
sparsha Posted on 07-Jun-02 08:28 AM

Prem ko mulya malai nasodha......by Prakas Shrestha.

And I used to hear Tel-ko mulya malai nasodha....I used to wonder what kind of song is this? Who is asking him " LITAR KO KATI HUH DAI TEL?"
Nepe Posted on 07-Jun-02 09:30 AM

Here is form me and mero ooni:

‘Key Ghar Hey Dera’ ko ‘Ko ho tyo jasley malai…. Why don’t you ask your love.. Why don’t you ask your love’

Was heard as ‘… Bhaley nchi basyo ra.. Bhaley nchi basyo ra’. Did not make much sense, but went on for a long time.

‘Kusumey rumal’ ko ‘Maya ko baarima…. Kusumey rumal.. Kusumey rumal’
Was heard as ‘…Hoossoo mero naam.. hoossoo mero naam’

Robin, the Loser Posted on 07-Jun-02 02:49 PM

This happened to me till last month. I would hear that Robin n' Loozaa's song as:
"Nepal...Nepal...mero Gulaa ko kaadhaa."
Little did I know he meant - "Gulaaf ko kaadha".
I was like- "dude, that is one sick M.F* ing song anyone has even written. Why would anyone come up with a song like that???" duh!...
Kancho Posted on 07-Jun-02 04:13 PM

Arun Thapa's song

"Mero geet sabai timilai" has a verse

And I think Arun Thapa was singing.

Preeti laune mutu tyo ...
Kukhura ko mal hooncha...

After many hard listening and after a friend (Jira) told me, I figured out that it was

Preeti laune mutu tyo ...
Chokho ra komal hooncha...
JackAss Posted on 07-Jun-02 05:40 PM

I remember Lipps Inc.'s 'Funky Town'...This is how I thought it went:

"Ma jutta becchu....ko kinchha"

meaning: I sell shoes, who buys em?

In actuality, it has always been: "Won't you take me to....FunkyTown"..
Sangey Posted on 07-Jun-02 06:17 PM

I was taking a bus from Siliguri to Darjeeling and the conductor was singing that Lips Inc's Funky Town song. But he was saying, "Ma jutta kinchu, paisa deu..."

Sight variation from JackAss's.

Hello Dhakalji. This is an intresting thread that you have started.

Ok i have never been able to understand this song by Gulam Ali

when he sings "kalo lamo pareli kesha chal pare kalilo maya ma". does he really say "chal". what does it mean? maybe he says something else but it sounds like he says "chal"

And this another one by nabin k.

"raata bityo hera timlai samjera nindra dalyo hera timilai kalpera ". My frens say that he says "dina dalyo" not nindra dalyo". They maybe right but I never hear that.

And then finally, 1974 ad's "samji baschu"

the guy sings "...everytime i look at a star i see your smiling face. try to work it out but everythign is out of place..." I have no idea what he says after "everything is out of place..."

Can any of you out there enlighten me? Thanx

Actually it was "Pai sparsha timro...."
kancho Posted on 07-Jun-02 11:11 PM

A friend of mine asked me once "Yo Safal bhanne ko ho?"
He was referring to "Safal, timro tyo jindagi lai"
bahun ko bacha Posted on 08-Jun-02 03:53 PM

all this time i thought nabin k. was saying "bais barsa timro..."

i will listen to the song again and see if it is indeed "pai sparsha timro.."

thanx deep
deep Posted on 08-Jun-02 04:09 PM

BKB,
I also used to hear "Bais Barsa Timro...." but then I thought that really does not make much sense, so I paid close attenion to that song to figure out what was he saying.

"Pai Sparsha Timro..." is what I think it is....Certainly, I am not the one who wrote that song (nor did I sang) to guarantee the lyrics but I am pretty much certain that "Pai Sparsha Timro..." is it. Let me know if I need to fine tune my ear and reasoning again i.e. if I am wrong.

thanx.

This is not about the song but certainly is about mishearing a word. there used to be an ad. for PROMISE toothpaste. ....Promise....Naya Promise....and I used to hear "Kameez....Naya Kameez....." what the hell...I used to think....may be it was Dashain time.

Hahah.. Our National Anthem. I always knew how to sing it, but i never understood it until i was in like 10th grade.
The anthem starts with " Shreeman gambhir nepali" and i used to think shreeman is like Mister, gambhir is the name(Like Gambirman went to london), and nepali is the last name. So i was like who the freeek is this gambhir nepali.

There was another one, anybody remember "bandinusnata"?? It was one comedy play (like bigyapan) when i was a kid. And i never understood the meaning of bandinusnata, until couple of years ago i asked my mom "what is bandinusnata?" and she told me its not bandinusnata, but " bani dinus na ta".. like a wife is asking her husband to pretend to be somebody else. i was like, whaaaa?

Mitra 2 Posted on 11-Jun-02 02:47 PM

There are many songs that I misheard, but I can think of one right now. This Narayan Gopal's song:

Malai nasodha kahan dukhchha ghaau
.....
'Andhyaro mai chhoda diyo najalau'
lai I used to hear
'Andhyaro ma chora thiyo najalau'
and of course, it didn't make any sense, so I found it from a geet collection book.

we mishear songs because musicians break words when they compose music. In this case, 'choda-diyo' is composed as one word instead of 2 separate words.
Mitra 2 Posted on 11-Jun-02 02:55 PM

One more...
Bachchu kailash's song:

I used to hear:

Chari.le bolyo ke bolyo kush.le kora
ke bolyo kush.le kora
Bhururu oodi gai halchha katai tira
gai halchha katai tira

real lyrics goes:

Chari.le bolyo ke bolyo bujhne ko ra? -- meaning 'chari.le boleko bujhne ko chha ra?
ke bolyo bujhne ko ra?
Bhururu oodi gai halchha katai tira
gai halchha katai tira

Suman Dhakal Posted on 11-Jun-02 06:01 PM

just remembered a song bachhu kailash sings that i used to mishear. he sings

"sunkosi ko pani jasto chokho priti launa paye...."

lai i used to hear

"sun ko sikko pani jasto chokho priti launa paye" i figured he meant gold coin or asurfi by "sun ko sikko". so that sort of made sense cause i thought sun was pure. but then later i was told that it was "sunkosi ko pani jasto". and indeed he does say "sunkosi ko pani jasto"

id Posted on 11-Jun-02 07:24 PM

there was this teacher in my high school who used to always comment in the inherent grammetical error in the song" tadha na jai deu timi malai chodi". His take was that there is no word as najaideu, it should be na jau, or na gaideu.whatever.
rai Posted on 12-Jun-02 02:13 AM

Well there is a hindi song
" Aap jaisa koi mere jindagi mein aaye aur BAAP banjaye " It is infact BAAT
Gives a funny twist !!!
Desh_Bhakta_Bhattarai Posted on 02-Aug-02 11:40 AM

I found this thread very interesting! That is why I gave rebirth to it. Do you all mishear some other songs?
For eg. I never understand the song "Ghumai Ghumai..." by Tara Devi and Pushpa Nepali. What are they saying? I need help from you guys in order to understand!
Another eg.: In the song : "Ritu Haaru Ma Timi.." by Arun Thapa, I used to hear(in one part of the song):
"...Saraswoti le malai, janma deeyaki,
Timro sundar daat* ko bayan garna..."

*daat : "teeth"
It was only yesterday when I found that it was:
"...Saraswoti le malai, janma deeyaki,
Timro sundarta ko bayan garna..."
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One more eg.,
In the song "Bida Hoone Bhai Gayo Bela..." by Pushpa Nepali and Tara Devi, in one particular line(by Tara Devi), I used to hear:
"...Lagai Deu ki saabun* ko mala..."
*saabun: "soap"
It is actually "sagun ko mala..."
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

lol!

Desk-bhakra mitra,

Are you sure you still hear "Saraswoti le malai, janma diyeeki.....timro sundarta ko bayan garna"?

I do not want to speculate whose mother is Swarasowti miss but this Saraswati in *Reetuharuma* song has no birth giving role.

This is how the song goes.

"...Prakritile malai, janma diyeeki timro sinodo ma sindoor bharna
Saraswatile kalam thamayeki timro sundartaako sandhai bayan garna..."

Thamayeki = diyeeki (to hold).

Katai *Dam maro dam* sunepachhi sunya ta haina *Reetuharuma timi...*?

One of the best thread, after Dohori.

My friend was asking me what kind of bird is 'Sammai'. He heard this song " Samay panchhi ho, khula yesko bandhan" by Danny, with his heavy accent on "Samaya."

Kusume Rumal, sounded like, Ko ko mero maal, back then.
Too many to remember.
