I am a recent immigrant here with a Green Card. I was wondering if Green Card holders are required to pay all payroll tax deductions like the Federal, State, State Disability and Social Security? Please post people.

What are you complaining about. Already you think you are being discrimated against. You have to pay like everyone else. You wanted to live here, now you are paying for the priviledge. This is a democratic society and we pay our taxes. Quit your crying and stop claiming priviledges.
!!! Posted on 14-Jun-02 08:56 AM

dude, you're not paying too much. you're just paying like everyone else. i pay the same as you and i'm not even a permanent resident like you. so stop complaining.
sally Posted on 14-Jun-02 09:06 AM

LOL.

Taxed Too Much, even though you're just a recent arrival, I can see you're well on your way to becoming a true American! Complaining about taxes already ... congratulations for being such a quick learner. Welcome to the land of the not-quite-free.

Whereas Bill, who pays his taxes so cheerfully, appears to be a secret Scandinavian ;-)
sangey Posted on 14-Jun-02 09:50 AM

We are all taxed too much. Hahahahah. Move to Canada and you will get a better perspective.
Hercules Posted on 14-Jun-02 09:51 AM

Oh boy, how quick we all love to attack others.

I don't think "Tax Too Much" is complaining about his tax pay. His ID may be but not his message.

Read his message again. He's new in US and he isn't understanding the system very well.
Rimjhim Posted on 14-Jun-02 10:56 AM

You r correct Hercules. All of us are expert on pulling other's leg if we see simple miskate. God, look at these people, they don't even read the message properly, don't contribute anything to the thread but are expert and ready and to attack others so quick hiding behing their keyboards.

Of course, am I not doing the same thing? yap..yap..yap...

God bless Nepal and Nepali

From my experience, You don't have to pay FICA (Social Security, Medical and other taxes except State and Federal income tax) when you are a student no matter you are a citizen or green card holder or a foreign student but that changes as soon as you start working as a full time employee and no more a student. I think I am right. That may have changed now though. There is no new taxes after you get the green card except you will be liable for the taxes in your income from sources outside the US but there is always double tax thing. If you are in non-immigrant visa, you don't have to show your non-US income for IRS.

Hope this helps little bit.

Having said that, US is one of the least taxed countries in the west. All of western Europe and Canada charge more tax than US. We somehow seem to miss that all the services government provides come free. As one of friend used to say, "Nothing comes free in America" Similary nothing comes free in the world. You have to pay for it.

For “Taxed Too Much”

Depending on an individual's Gross Annual Salary, Filing Marital Status and # of Dependants, a certain percent of your Earned Income are TAXED as Federal, State and Local. Please refer to the following Information to find out which FEDERAL TAX BRACKET you fit into:

http://www.irs.gov/irs/display/0,,i1%3D46%26genericId%3D10826,00.html

OR, you could simply visit the following web link to compute your TAXES and NET INCOME:

http://www.paycheckcity.com/NetPayCalc/netpaycalculator.asp

Other DEDUCTIONS from your Gross Income relate to your participation in programs like Social Security, Medicare, 401K(Retirement plans) and Health Insurance, to name the most common ones. Programs like these are "optional" but are more likely to benefit in the long run.

Taxed Too Much,

Don't complain... each and every of us are paying similar taxes and for some, it is even more. I think the only peopl who are in advantage are few of the ones who are out of status and who don't care even if they get deported. But for us, who are here on status and have to maintain certain status (not social but visa) , we are screwed.

And gues where majority of our tax money goes to... ya in defense (supposedly). Building arms and weapons which the government say for defense but we all know where it goes.

I agree that part of it gives us some of the benefits and services, but not as much as we pay.

Finally, it is normal to pay so much tax and it is even more normal to complain about it. There is no need for "go back to your country..." or "you won't get your priviledges..." crap. I think each and every individual in US knows that the taxes are high but unless and until lawmakers decide to act on it, nothing will happen.

Where does the tax money go? It depends on who does the counting.

When the War Resister's League is in charge of the calculator, military spending is a backbreaking 47 percent of the budget. They reach their figures partly by assuming that 80 percent of the national debt is military (a figure that is--naturally enough--disputed along ideological lines). They count Human Resources as 34 percent of the total budget, but conveniently exclude Social Security and Medicare payroll taxes from their calculation because those go to a trust fund and are thus "different."

Put the same figures in the hands of the Bush administration, and military spending ends up as a measly 16 percent of the budget, while social programs end up as whopping 47 percent. They reach THEIR figures by counting social security and payroll taxes as part of the budget, but excluding foreign military aid, military pensions, NASA military research, and so on from the military portion.

Wasn't it a prime minister of England who said there were three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics?
taxfan Posted on 15-Jun-02 09:42 AM

No, you are not taxed too much. You never had taxes seriously deducted from your paycheck before (in Nepal?), therefore you are kinda antsy. Normal for new green-card arrivees.

What else does your tax dollar do to you and your state? Visit the site of PORKS http://publications.cagw.org/PigBook2002/introduction.htm

Thanks again for all the input. Unfortunately, nobody seems to be getting my drift. I understand that as a F-1 student, one is not required to pay the Social Security Tax or FICA. Only State and Federal taxes are deducted. Now, what I wanted to know was if this applied to Green Card holders also. Although a permanent resident here, I don't think I'll be staying until my retirement days at age 65. That's when Social Security payments supposedly kick in. If I don't need the use of Social Security, why should I have to pay for it? Besides, isn't this system on the verge of bankruptcy?
