Now, this might be my wishful thinking in technicolor, but for what it's worth, here it is. I have tried to be as bold as possible and not pick any presumed favorites. These teams will make it to Quarter Finals: 1. Brazil 2. England 3. Germany 4. Mexico 5. Spain 6. Italy 7. Senegal 8. Japan These teams will proceed to Semi Finals: 1. Mexico 2. Spain 3. England 4. Senegal These teams will be in the Final: 1. Mexico 2. England England will lift the cup. Mexico will be the runners up. Spain will win the third place. PARTY ON!!!!

Mr Sangey, My prediction is Brazil will make to the final from one side and Germany from the other... and they will clash in the final .... Either Brazil will win in a clean way OR Germany will win in a crappy way ...like a stupid penalty kick ...

First two of my predictions came true and are in the bag. Yaouza Daouza ! Germany 1: Paraguay 0 Germany won, though it was quite a tough fight for them to get that one and only goal. The very fact that they have reached Quarter Finals is in itself a feat because not much was expected from them. They had been performing so poorly until they played their first match against Saudi Arabia. Well, good for them. England 3 : Denmark 0 Now England is something else. How decisive can a victory be? Lots of people, including those BBC commentators, thought that this match will come to penalty shots. Well, they thought wrong. Ferdinand scored the first one, and adding to that, apparently he was just signed by Manchester United for some 35 million pounds the other day. I guess they have to up that by few more millions now. The second goal was by Owen, the clean cut golden boy finally gets to leave his mark in World Cup history after so many heroic tries. Lot of fans were criticizing Coach Eriksson for putting Heskey in the starting line-up. Well they were all silenced with that powerful third goal by Heskey. Becks, after getting his revenge with hated Argies, was just as dynamic in this game with Denmark. He was everywhere. And much credit should go to him for first and third goals, because they were possible only with his immaculate placements. Well, lot of my good friends are favoring Brazil. But I still say, England all the way, baby.

I love Italy. And never underestimate the Serie A veterans. they have seen the best...are used to the worst...and are capabale of holding the best at bay... Just getting tired of perennial favorites Brazil, though. They have so much depth and talent...and only thing that can cost them the Cup is clash of titans. All these stars have huge egos and they may not click as a team. Can't underestimate England...and if their form against Denmark is anything to go by, they are peaking at the right moment. Any side that has the likes of Owen and Beckham - arguably the best striker, and the best freekick and cross specialist in the game - could run away with the Cup. But luck as you may have already seen over the last several days plays a huge, huge role. See the Spain v. Ireland, and Sweden v. Senegal clashes. There's not much to choose between many of these teams - i am not talking about S. Arabia, and China here. The hapless Argentines in their last game...With talent that runs so deep--matched perhaps only by Brazil--on their day, Ortega, Batistuta, Lopez and Co. would have romped home with at least six goals. Mexico certainly looks sharp (watch for No 10 Blancos!! Supposedly extremely temperamental too, but the Mexican coach doesn't mind so long as he scores goals) and so does Senegal. But I would put my money on Korea, ahead of Japan. Going by the Cup history, i wouldn't want to dismiss the home side/s.

Holy Guacamole !!! What the fudge happened? Mexico lost to USA. How come? I had them in the Final (see my prediction above). That throws everything into haywire. Shoot! But again, Mexico lost to USA? Incredible! I mean, for God's sake, USA? I mean the country which finds football, ahem soccer, so boring that 80 percent of the population would not give World Cup a second thought. Less than 0.5% of the television set owners in the US of A watches the tournament. And they are now one of the Elite Eight. Oh Speedy Gonzales, where are you? For the sky has fallen on the heads of amigos. On a very small side note, Brazil won over Belgium. Hyaaaaa.... so what. Tell me what's new.

Village voice is so right about Italy. I love them always have and always will but that is beside the point here. I think that Italy is not to be underestimated Especially with a team like they have this year. They have just been a bit unfortunate (thanks to the referees and lines men!!) They don't really play a game like brazil does, usually with Italy its score a goal at the most two and then defend but I think this year all that is about to change. We had a bad experience by doing that in the finals of the european cup 2000. I think they have a good chance of winning as well. It looks like Brazil is going to the finals this year no matter what. Though I would like to see England in the finals with Germany, Italy or Spain. Though Spain has never made it to the world cup finals. But this world cup seems to be the WC of firsts so why shouldn't spain not make it to the finals. However it is really looking good for England!! FORZA AZZURRI E VIVA IL CALCIO ITALIANO!!!!! FORZA JUVE!!!! ALEX U ARE THE BEST!! AND THANK U ECUADOR!!!

Personnally, I am also feeling that this world cup is going to be like world cup 1966. At that time, defending champion brazil(with wounded pele) could not enter in second round. This time, defending champion france(with wounded zidane) was also unable to enter in second round. Second round qualifying North korea defeated Italy and reached quarter final, now south korea(representing from asia) is also to playing the historic match for the second time. 'Black leopard' (of that time) portugal became the surprise team beating defending champion brazil at that time and now senegal is also in same momentum . W inner of World cup held in AMERICA became the american countries and winner of world cup matches held in Europe became the european countries. For the first time, it is being held in ASIA. let's see who will become the world cup winner ?(probably ENGLAND who is the most favourite team in JAPAN after their home team, beckham even said that he may play in japan in the future).

Hey Biswo, I am not surprised you were rooting for the Chinese. But I wasn't disappointed since I didn't expect much from them in any case. Can't really tell who the fovorites are... Having survived the group of death, England certainly is playing well. Italy is capable of beating any team... And Brazil has wealth of talent - they just need one of their great forwards to click. But I would still put my money on the home side - the Koreans, ahead of the Japanese. Yes, Sangey, for goodness' sake not Americans. No, no, no. I will settle for any team, even the unattractive, physical Germans (sorry Geman fans), rather than the Yanks.

Hi biswo: With the Team Azzurri out, I'm heartbroken. But see my two previous postings, I DID say that my money's on Korea. Here's my semifinal lineup: England V. Senegal: Brazil's defense is a huge suspect against solid sides as England Korea v. Germany: There's no stopping the Koreans, who will continue to enjoy home advantage. Umpiring decisions going their way; they got a penality today, for example, against Italy within the first five minutes or so; Totti was redcarded. Count on more such decisions against Spain. But they are playing well - while luck does play a huge role in football, you can't ride on it all the way. Final: England V. Korea Winner: ???England, probably. Since Korea will be playing outside home in Yokahoma, Japan. And Japanese aren't exactly korean fans.

Italy lost today with Korea but the Italians are going out with thier heads held high!! Strange things happen in soccer and all of us who follow it know that. I don't want to create too much controversy here BUT Blatter should quit. I still don't know how he won the last elections. Trap should have withdrawn with his AZZURRIS after the match they lost with croatia. I would still like to believe in fair play but right now I'm sorry I don't. I will still watch soccer and this time I am rooting for the brasilians or the english (just a pity that they are playing in the quarter finals against each other) I am Nepali but my heart beats AZZURRO!! Maybe if Nepal would play in the worldcup then I would support them but untill then Forza Azzurri, Forza Juve e long live italian calcio!!! Anyway having said that. I would put my money Brazil or England!! The S.Koreans will be there in the finals but one italian will still make it to the finals Collina (too bad he is the best ref in the world and he can't be bought) I'm sorry to the people who are reading this post but right now I am just a very very mad soccer fan!! I don't think South Koreans didn't deserve the match. In football, every viewer wants to be umpire and I don't blame you guys for venting your frustration against the umpire who gave it all to the South Koreans. But Italians played a lousy game , esp in the second half. Vierri missed one golden chance, anyway. Mistakes are costly in world cup. Re South Korea, I think the last time they played this well was Vs Germany in USA, when they finished 2-3 in their loss.

I am totally, absolutely, positively befuddled by this World Cup. What IS happening? Italy has lost to Korea. How can that be? I can understand Italy losing to likes of England, Brazil or even Spain. But Korea? Maybe they had too much local beer with khimchee. I knew Italy was in poor shape because they narrowly qualified for the 2nd round, but I thought they would be safe till they meet Spain in Quarterfinals. Oh well. On the other note, Japan losing to Turkey was not as big a surprise. Their reputations and skill-sets were more evenly matched, although I thought the home team would prevail. I was especially hoping that Alex, probably their only non-native player, would score one goal, but alas not so. Valiant effort, but lady luck was just not in Japan's favor. Ok here's my NEW World Cup prediction, These teams will advance to Semi-finals: -England -Senegal -Germany -Spain Following will be the finalists: -England -Germany It'll be like second world war all over again. England will win the cup. Obviously, Germany will be second. And, Senegal will take the third place. Sid, I think I will be buying you beer instead on the 4th because England will not only beat Brazil, but also go all the way :-) ps - thanks not-so-fan.

Sangey, You just don’t like Kimchee and Korean BBQ or what? :-) I noticed that you have picked Spain over Korea. Though Spain hasn’t lost a game yet, I have a feeling that they won’t be able to overcome Koreans. With the support of 40,000+ “red devils” and their ability to play for full 90 mins, they will be victorious and make a history representing Asia in the semi finals. From the other side of the table, Senegal will join Koreans in the history making process. What if one team each from different continents represent in semi finals? England from Europe, Senegal from Africa, US from NA and Korea from Asia OR Brazil, Senegal, Germany and Korea. This way it will become a WORLD CUP in a truer sense. No more domination of European and South American teams. It just could happen. Keep your fingers crossed. :-)

Yes, the Italian club firing the Korean scorer looks a bit ridiculous. But I would wait and see some more news reports on that before jumping to conclusions. Managers of the Italian teams, more than anyone else perhaps, understand only too well that their expernsive overseas players have their national commitments too. The Italian response, if at all motivated by the deciding goal, is really unsporting.

Paschim: The movie sounds hilarious. Beckham *is* a major, major crowd-puller in England. Can't really blame our star-struck Asian girl. Personally, I find diasporic life fascinating. That can be said about Nepalis too. Here in US, I come across interesting ideas on people's (Nepalis') take on "culture," children caught between high parental expectations (conservative) and their individual interests/desire (far less conservative). Nepali diaspora *is* much smaller than the Indian diaspora, no doubt. But that doesn't make indiviual Nepali stories any less interesting. Someone who's been in the west for a long time, seen it all, say like NK, should write about it. Seen ABCD, American Born Confused Desi? That's fun too.

But having been witness to the most scandalous display of refereeing in human history, I would not be surprised by anything happening (read as: Marc Wilmots). Mad respect to Becks, although he has a silly voice. Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt, both due. ENGERLAND MIDFIELD, POWERED BY MANCHESTER UNITED (and thats why they'll win).

NK, I have started another thread: Writing Stories. Let's devote this one just to the world's cup. That said, tonight's clash between Brazil and England should be a classic. Team work v. individual flair. Brazil has outstanding talents in the three Rs, who can turn the game round in seconds. And of course the irrepresible Roberto Carlos, the sharpshooter. Englan definitely doesn't have so much individual flair, but David Beckham can single-handedly turn the game round with his precision passes and free kicks, arguably the best in the game. And Owen is the goalscorer par excellence. He has been a consistent goalscorer for Englan for the last few years. While pre-tournament favorites France, Italy, Argentina and Portugal were undone by poor unpiring, bad luck, and the media hype, the second-string teams like Englan, Germany and Spain have quietly moved up without much fuss. England are certainly peaking at the right moment. Here's what the great Pele's has to say: Brazil: The three Rs. (Can't name them. The site doesn't accept their names. Serious!!!) England: Sol Campell is an unbelievable player. Rio Ferdinand and Sol Campbell, the two defenders from England impressed me very much. David Beckham has played, well, so-so if I might say. Germany: Michael Ballack is fantastic and Miroslav Klose surprised me. USA: Donovan and John O´Brien. I have not seen O´Brien play before this tournament, but he plays very well - an excellent player.

Well, there goes my prediction. I concede. When you are defeated, you are defeated. England put its best foot forward, but not forward enough. Brazil is just too good. While the free kick goal was more of an accident, or rather mistake on the keeper Seaman's part, the other goal was true work of art. Did you see how Ronaldhino galloped with superb dribbling skill all the way and made that awesome pass to Rivaldo, who pretty much nailed the English coffin shut? It was poetry in motion. Though I am/was England fan, that play won me over. At that very moment, I just had to throw up my arms and admit, yes, Brazil IS indeed the best team in the world today. Even with only 10 men (btw, I too believe Ronaldhino's ejection was totally uncalled for), they were the better team on the field. They are just too talented, too fast, too strong, too ghustighrey, too... I am running out of words here. Folks, that was THE final game of 2002 FIFA World Cup. They might as well hand over the trophy to Captain Cafu. I know it, you know it, every kid and his dog in this football crazy world knows it. Brazil is the tournament champion. Period. -x- I think USA played very well against Germany. A valiant effort, but in the end the team with experience won. German defense, with an exceptional performance of their goalkeeper, was just impenetrable. But the very fact that Bruce Arena's American team made it this far was an achievement. So, I think US team has nothing to feel sad about. I only wish they would get at least a decent fan support back home. A typical reaction at the main-street of America would be, "oh we did not win the world championship? oh ok, maybe next year Dallas Cowboys will get it for us." (Dallas Cowboys is American Football team, get the joke?) -x- Having seen the sea of Red Devils in frenzy -inside and outside of stadium, and knowing that Raul is injured - he may or may not play, I have to change my prediction and say that Korea will win over Spain in tomorrow's game. Let's see what happens.

Sangey, I agree with you about Ronaldinho. Although Owen, Roberto Carlos and Rivaldo were players of the day today, Ronaldinho was a classic magician. When he was shown the red card, I was amazed, but I noticed that he was also sheepishly grinning, and was hanging around for a few seconds hoping that the referee would overturn the decision, and then he left graciously. Unfortunately, then football's one of the most spellbinding game died slowly. But I remember Ronaldinho, specially his quote from last year, "I am ugly, but I have charm."

I am Brazil's fan again. 1 - Senegal will beat Turkey tomorrow. Score 2-0. 2 - Senegal will be 1-0 during first half, next goal in second half (60-70 min) 3 - There will be one red card for Turkish player. No controversy, it will be a clear shot. 4 - Spain will be defeated by korean leopards. First goal will be from Korea during late first half. There will be some yellow cards counting up to odd number either 3 or 5. 5 - It will be 1-1 again before 65th minute, another goal will be carried out by korea in between 70-80 th minute. Let us see how it goes

>4 - Spain will be defeated by korean leopards. First goal will be from Korea during >late first half. There will be some yellow cards counting up to odd number either >3 or 5. Jiraji's prophecy were accurate, and I think it will again be accurate. The more the game progresses, the more the Koreans look invincible. I think the late substitute player Cha who came to play against Italy to pull late miracle was such fast a sprinter that he could almost rival Roberto Carlos. He was running in the filed like a 100m sprinter.Spain can very well lose this game! Also, I remember one program aired in cnn before World Cup re world cup. It was a collection of opinions of diplomats in UN about the prospect of their country in the World Cup. The Korean diplomat said he hoped Korea to reach to semi finals. I was like, "hya, dream on .."

I don't think you know much about football if you think that England was going to win. Brazil is a cut above the rest and they are sure to get to the final even win the cup.

Okay...penalties are cruel. I'm glad Korea won just now, but it's just not a graceful way to win. With England gone, I'll have to shift my loyalties. I'll decide after watching Senegal tonight. I'm also very impressed with Jira-ji's predictions, so I'll listen to him carefully too. But yes, deep inside, I too think it's Brazil's turn to lift the cup for the fifth time, but I still pray that the result will be something that *no one* predicted. I don't know if people remember, but some of the odds floated before the matches began were like: South Korea: 150-1 Senegal: 100-1 Turkey: 50-1 and France: 4-1 Argentina: 7-2 Italy: 6-1 Guess who is where as of today. Isn't football so much like a marriage? Unpredictable, rocky and fun. And you try to score without the permission of the other party.

Finally, an asian team in semi final of the world cup. Korea played well against Spanish strategy of staying deep and playing 9 men behind the ball. Koreans did get a couple of calls their way, but again thats what happens in the game of football. A win is a win, doesn't matter if it comes from PK or Goalden goal. Germans beware! Koreans, with their ability to play for 90+ mins in full strength and support of the "red devils", might just re-write football history again. GO KOREA! GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Brazil-England clash didn't live upto the billing. It was OKAY. Nothing more. Nowhere near say Brazil V. France enounter (which Cup was that? General Platini controlled the midfield with Tigana and Co, and Brazil had great fowards in Zico and Socrates, was it, etc? Quarterfinal clash that wemt Brazil's way) Two great players on both sides - Ronaldo and Beckham, both haunted, very much so after long injury layoffs - have played far below their potential all through. Pele says Ronaldo is just palying 70 % With England gone, and Korea sneaking through, I would like to see Korea v. Brazil final. No, not the physical Germans (a 6'3" striker, towring over others, scoring with a header. Effective, sure, but devoid of any grace) for goodness' sake. Each time this team wins, to me, football loses. While Korea did look impressive early on, their attack was toothless in the last two encounters--against Italians and Spain, and they looked ordinary. And they are extremely lucky to have survived the luckless Spain. But such things do happen in the game. I don't think the Brazil defense would be so impregnable as that of Italy and Spain. I have a sinking feeling that their giant-killing streak may just run out against the Germans, who in the past have beaten extremely telaneted teams with their scrappy, but effective, football. If they do manage to overcome Germans, I will put my money on them to beat Brazil to lift the Cup. My only regret: the best player in Brazil, the attacking midfielder Ronaldinho, won't be there against the Turks. Unlike Ronaldo, he says that it makes no sense if he scores but his side loses.

Their giant-killing streak refers of course to the lowly South Korea's Wrold Cup exploits this time...I thought i sounded a bit ambigious above.

I am disgusted with the match that Korea played against Spain. How can a team feel they have won when spain was playing against 13 men the ref and the lines man and the korean team. Its just disgusting. Two good goals annulled and one being a golden gold. I am sorry to say that Asia(Korea) has shown the world how uncapable it is of hosting the world cup. Its all about interest in money. And people who think that Korea is a good team I say open your eyes and see the truth. THEY CHEATED BIG TIME!!!! Those of us who didn't see it didn't coz we didn't want to. FIFA - FAIR PLAY, I SAY FIFA THIEF!!!! When all this strated I wanted to see an Asian team make it to the top (and the only one who i thought was capable was Korea ) But right now its not about the best team winning its about who is willing to pay the most. My hats would have come off to them if they had made it up there on thier own but like this they just cheated thier way to the top. This world cup will go down in history as the world cup of the worst ref and fifa being sued for various reasons. Unfortunately today Korea didn't win but football lost to Blatter and politics!!!! My predictions Brazil - Germany two great teams (one european and one s.amercan the way it should be at least for now. ) Unfortunately Asian football isn't developed enough to reach the finals of the world cup. Africa deserves it more.

The series of refereeing blunders have favored the home teams and I do not see any reason why this does not happen again in the semifinals. I am very confident that Korea will be playing at Yokohama, thanks to the referees and linesmen and obviously their own work rate. Their never-say-die attitude is praiseworthy indeed! I, however, expect their dream run to end gracefully against Brazil. Brazil have not played thier usual charming offensive football in the knockout stages but some magic from rivaldo, denilson and juninho should take them through to the final.

It was really frustrating now that Spain lost because of mistake of the linesman. In fact all the matches Korea won have been surrounded by controversy and finnaly the FIFA president admitted that the referee and the linesmen made Blunder mistake.Pele already said this year the World Cup has seen the worst referees in the history of soccer. It wont surprise me if Turkey and Korea meet in the finals and Korea wins.

How can a team feel >they have won when spain was playing against >13 men the ref and the lines man and the >korean team. Its just disgusting. Sadly, it happens everywhere. It happenened in NBA. It is happening in FIFA. BUT, i do not want to see any favour to Brazilian team as the refrees did in last Brazil-Turkey game. Go Turkey!! Asian fan
