Nepal king will seek greater Indian role .... and finally sell the nation to the Dhoti Bhaiya by the "monarch" ! Now its clear why he killed his brothers family. If you dont believe, read this. Bye for now. Hic Rhodus in Kathmandu **************************** DILEEP PADGAONKAR TIMES NEWS NETWORK [ TUESDAY, JUNE 18, 2002 12:00:18 AM ] KATHMANDU: During his official visit to India later this month -his first visit abroad after he ascended the throne in the wake of the royal massacre a little over a year ago - King Gyanendra can be expected to pursue two objectives. He will seek a higher level of Indian assistance to combat the scourge of Maoist terrorism now ravaging large parts of the kingdom. And, no less significant, he will aim to secure India’s understanding for such measures that he may be called upon to take if Nepal’s fractious political class is unable to get its act together to provide a stable government after the elections scheduled to be held in November. Though he did not articulate these concerns explicitly in the course of an exclusive interview with this newspaper —his first such interaction with a foreign publication after his coronation —his remarks both on and off the record left no room for doubt about his expectations from the visit. This much was obvious, first and foremost, from the manner in which he addressed India’s security concerns. Asked about heightened ISI activities in the kingdom, the king reiterated Nepal’s “firm policy not to allow any activities against another country from her soil”. He went on to stress that Nepal has never believed in the “short-sighted policies” of trying to “balance” India, on the one hand, and Pakistan and China on the other. Alongside he lauded India-Nepal ties in the warmest possible terms and in particular expressed high appreciation for India’s support in tackling the Maoist menace. He said that the Nepalese people, like citizens of any country, are highly protective of their sovereignty. He said that he saw nothing wrong in this but went on to add: “This desire of the Nepalese people should not in any way be construed as an impediment to the existing state of cordiality and friendship that Nepal and India have been maintaining since times immemorial.” Then came this emphatic statement: “Our relations remain special because they are practical, pragmatic and beneficial.” But a greater part of the interview was devoted to domestic issues. Without any direct reference to them, it was clear that the king was highly uneasy with the squabbles in the political establishment. He pointed out that democratic virtues like the rule of the law; accountability, transparency and good governance are taking time to take roots in the society. The king did not subscribe to the view that the Maoist problem is largely due to uneven economic and social development. He said terror and violence are never a solution nor an answer to such problems. About the royal massacre, the king said that “words cannot describe the agony and anguish the Nepalese people and we personally had to bear” and went on to add: “Under the circumstances, we have come to recognise that our enthronement was something preordained”. And he concluded on this note which revealed his resolve. “In keeping with the tradition of the Shah dynasty, the challenging responsibility of upholding the laws of the land and an opportunity of serving Nepal and the Nepalese has fallen on our shoulders. As a dutiful descendent, we shall not shy away from fulfilling our duty,” declared the monarch.
