Gorkhalis like to hate Indians, say all bad things about them but when it comes to film, actor, actress, songs they love more Indian than their own Nepali products.

You're saying Kollywood is copied from Bollywood or Hollywood. Where do you think Bollywood came from?

Let's not forget our own products, let's sell them to the world whatever we could produce. It's very obvious that people always think that other's yard is greener than his own.

So let's list some good nepali movies, songs, actors and actress. Let's support our own industry.
NepGirl Posted on 20-Jun-02 04:21 PM

Hercules? Why is yr name not Chankhey or Shiva Shanker or Master Ratna Das Prakash? Talking about promoting Nepali names and fames? Afno aangma Bhainsi nadhekney arka ko aang ma jumra dhekney. K ho yesto bekaaida?

Hercules,

i watch english (too many to list here)
chinese - Shanghai Triad, shower, eat drink man woman, not one less
italian - johnny stoccio (johnnly toothpick), melina
persian movies, german movie etc.....

so, why not Indian movies ?

we listen to music that we don't understand "oye como va", "la bamba" so why not indian music.

i think art as a whole should not be taken as beloning to any language but its for all to enjoy.

i know there are lots of junk hindi movies but some are good. i liked "lagaan" - that was my first hindi movie after 8 years or so and i can tell they have improved so much.

any nepali movies you guys recommend ?

Nep_Girl and commenter,

You guy didn't get the point. My point is not about watching other language movies. You're free to do so. Everyone have their own choice. Perhaps the point here is why do we discuss in this bb about foreign language movie rather than nepali movie.

I'm brining this issue up because when ID like Patel Singh and others started discussing about Nepal and India relation sort of things almost everybody attacked him. Lots of people gave opinion that Patel Singh should not even come here. He's talking only about India.

And finally site admin decided to have seperate place to discuss for India related stuff.

In this bulletin board I can see the under some movie links like "Helpful Sites" Movies and Indian Movies (Aap Ka Manoranjan) but no Nepali movies link. Do you think it's helpful for Nepali or Nepal?

You guys claimed this is completely a Nepal and Nepali related BB so nothing should be discussed outside but how come there's exception here.

Can anybody give me a reasonable answer on this?
heracles Posted on 21-Jun-02 03:48 PM

herc,

i got your point, and here's a reasonable answer, since you asked for one.

patel singh is or is posing as an indian and is posting india-centric stuff. there is a long history of precedence in which nepal-related sites, such as soc.culture.nepal, have been taken over by mostly indians and others posting really inflammatory things. i happen to believe that patel singh's posts are nepal-related, no matter how offensive. i also believe that others here are perfectly entitled to react/respond to patel singh's posts as they see fit, within accepted norms. they can even say that they don't think he should post or be allowed to post on sajha.com, which in no way compels the site administrator to heed those calls to ban patel singh from the site.

as for this "must see movies" thread, i think you're way off if you think it runs counter to the loose rule that posts here should be either by nepalis OR else nepal-related. i capitalized "OR" because this thread satisfies the first condition in that the thread was posted "by nepalis". what's so anti-sajha.com about nepalis discussing movies? chances are that there won't be many "must see" nepali movies playing in boston-area or elsewhere outside of nepal this weekend, so it's perfectly fine for folks to compare notes and help each other fill up those weekend dance cards.
Hercules Posted on 21-Jun-02 04:06 PM

>what's so anti-sajha.com about nepalis discussing movies?

It's nothing anti sajha discussing movies but it's anti sajha or not good from Nepal and Nepalese prospective to have helpful sites for English movie and Hindi movie but not Nepali movie.

>chances are that there won't be many "must see" nepali movies playing in boston->area or elsewhere outside of nepal this weekend, so it's perfectly fine for folks to >compare notes and help each other fill up those weekend dance cards.

Is sajha just for Bostonians? The Helpful Links in sajha.com movies and Aap ka monoranjan is not movie show in Boston by the way. It's just the link about the films.

All I'm saying is we should be patriotic and support our industry. Sell ourselves. Don't just after the green yard that other's have.

Our film industry is just about 10 years old vs. Hollywood and Bollywood century old.

FYI I have no relation whatsoever with the film industry.
moni Posted on 21-Jun-02 06:35 PM

I absolutely understand and agree with Hercules here. You guys,he's not comparing Hollywood or Bollywood with our Kollywood. He's just saying that whatever Nepali movies are out there, there's certainly a few of them that are worth watching.Out of hundreds of Hindi movies that come out,a very few of them are good, otherwise it's the same old rich guy-poor girl or vice versa crap.I'm not saying Nepali movies are only good but with the kind of budget and equipments they have, some of them are pretty darn good. You'd know if you would have seen them.Afterall we are Nepalis and there's nothing wrong to support our own industries may it be films or any other.Just my thought.
moni Posted on 21-Jun-02 06:57 PM

Nep girl,we are talking movies.Names don't matter,thoughts do.If so,how come you're not supporting Nepali movies and Nepal.Please don't be so irrelevently judgemental.So unnecessary.
SECOND2NONE Posted on 22-Jun-02 09:34 AM

Except ROYAL TENENBAUMS, the list sounds interesting. I think royal Tenenbaums was overrated by critics. Road Trip is better comedy than that.

Other movies if you like to use the NEPALI brain and if you like a quality movie,

1. Sexy beast> watch for the Ben Kingsley's performance

2. The Man who wasn't There.
(Dark comedy in black and white) Billy Bob Thronton.

3. Vanilla Sky
A rollercoaster ride. Turns your mind upside down. Tom Cruise

4. Minority Report. Steven Spilberg Movie starring Tom Cruise
If you think you really have brain inside your skull and you really appreciate the effort of genius movie making, this movie is masterpiece.
naresh_karki Posted on 22-Jun-02 11:05 AM

Some very good art movies from bollywood.

1. Dhorakaal ( Kamal Hasan and Ashish Viwarthi)
2. Suraj ka satawaa Ghoda ( Shyam Benegal)

These movies are very good . If you got chance please watch it.
sexybeast Posted on 23-Jun-02 10:30 AM

Karki Ji, Drohakal is a very good movie, but it doesn't have Kamal Hasan but Nasiruddin shah, om puri and Asish in it. Suraj ka satwa ghoda is okay...
second2none Posted on 23-Jun-02 11:12 AM

Has anyone seen paral ko aago? one of the best nepali films ever made.
Shanti Posted on 23-Jun-02 10:41 PM

Best Nepali movies:

1) Caravan aka Himalaya
2) Lobhi Paapi
3) Paral ko aago
4) Jhuma
5) Prem Pinda
6) Samjhana
7) Mukundo
8) Hijo Aaj Bholi
9) Aama
10) Karodpati

We can keep adding. Nepali film industry has done really good job in this 10 years. However they need to focus more on quality rather quantity like Bollywood does. If we keep maiking movie like Caravan, Lobhi Paapi etc with some unique story we will be in very good shape.

Let's not import Bombay formula.

Jay Nepal.
naresh_karki Posted on 23-Jun-02 11:29 PM

Yea sexybest....I am sorry . It is Nasiruddin. I was confused with the copy of Drohakal that was remaked in Tamil. Thanks for reminding me. Indeed it is a milestone in hindi and tamil movie.
