Complaint against Nepal king for animal sacrifice

GUWAHATI: An animal rights group has registered a "prior intimation report" against Nepal King Gyanendra, tipping off the city police about a "possible attempt" by him to sacrifice animals at the hilltop Kamakhya shrine here.

The local unit of the People for Animals (PFA) on Tuesday officially informed the Jalukbari police station here of how the Nepal king - in his maiden visit to the city on June 27 - was planning to perform this "illegal act."

"Whatever King Gyanendra plans to do is illegal - one cannot sacrifice an animal in a public place under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 (Act 59 of 1960)", Sangeeta Goswami, PFA's local chief, pointed out.

According to her, the priest and owner of the animal can be arrested, fined and jailed up to five years if a person files a complaint about this in the local police station.

"We have done our bit. Why, we have also submitted copies of our complaints to the chief minister, besides appealing to the deputy commissioner to stop this proposed sacrifice. In fact, the Kamrup deputy commissioner has already accepted our complaint. Now, they should stop the sacrifice", Goswami said.

Earlier, the official priest of Nepal's ruling dynasty, Mrinal Sharma, had earlier said that two buffaloes had already been acquired for Thursday's sacrifice. "The king will offer panchabali - the sacrifice of a buffalo, a sheep, a goat, a duck and a pumpkin - at the sacred altar of the goddess", he had said.

However, when contacted, additional superintendent of city police, Rana Bhuyan, asserted that he was "unaware till this moment" about any such prior intimation report.

Significantly, the move has found support from none other than the famous Jnanpith awardee from Assam, Indira Goswami. "We welcome the king to Assam. However, he should do something constructive during his visit for the temple, not shed blood of innocent animals. Otherwise, the king's actions might be misconstrued as the ideals to follow by his people", the writer told this correspondent over telephone from New Delhi.

Goswami said she had opposed the practice of offering sacrifices at the Kamakhya shrine even through her writings in books like Chinnamasta. "The gods can be appeased even with flowers. And, if human sacrifice can stop, why not the sacrifice of animals?" she asked.
