India builds dam inside Nepali territory
KOL Report

KATHAMDNU, July 6 - Border demarcation work carried out by a joint team of experts of Nepal and India has come to a halt after the Indian side was found to have unilaterally built a dam over a river inside Nepal causing inundation in some border villages of Morang district.

The work of fixing lost border pillars near the bordering Bardanga VDC was suspended last week after the Nepali team found India’s unilateral construction of the 300-meter-long dam over the Bakraha River about one-and-half months ago. The dam has submerged around 400 meters of Nepali land in the VDC, about 50-km southeast of Biratnagar.

Surveyor of No. 1 Border Demarcation, Purna Bahadur KC, said that India built the dam about 400 meters inside Nepal’s territory, which, according to him, is a clear violation of the border point previously fixed by the Nepal-India Joint Demarcation Team (NIJDT). Some of the border pillars erected earlier are on the verge of collapse due to the dam that clogged waters of the Bakraha River.

New demarcation of the border area could not proceed ahead, as the area is lying under water. KC said that border pillars from 198/1 to 9 have been affected by the inundation. “If the situation continues, other border pillars cannot be built there,” he said, adding that they have to wait for next year to resume the work of border demarcation.

It is reported that Jagadish Prasad, one of the members of Indian team representing the NIJDT, claimed the Indian government’s ignorance over the already built dam.

But contrary to the claim made by the Indian team, an Indian national of Saihadabad Village, Kinnu Prasad Singh, told The Kathmandu Post that “the dam was built by their government to protect their villages from flooding”.

Experts said that four villages of Nepal were sure to get flooded due to the four-meter-high dam. A local of Bardanga VDC said that they did not raise any protest when the dam was being built, as they had no knowledge about the exact location of border.

Morang Chief District Officer Dolakh Bahadur Gurung on Wednesday visited the affected area only after the media coverage about India’s unilateral construction of the dam. Gurung, after his return from the field inspection, said he has asked his Indian counterpart to immediately demolish the dam. (yo)

Who is responsible?

Does king and royal families knows this? Do Deuba and Girija knows this? Does any nepalese intellactual knows this?

Do you think this current politicians have gutts to run nepal like this way?

Indian army are increasing Indian's boundry pillars toward nepal in every year. If we ignore this indian action, we will lose nepal in one morning when we wake up.

Think deeply what your heart will tell you?
Stop them! Posted on 07-Jul-02 12:06 PM

Indians will not take over the whole of Nepal. They know that they will not gain much and only have a new front to fight. Besides Nepal also protects them by being a buffer zone agains China, which is far more powerful than India.

The greatest danger to us is that :With overtaking Nepal militarily, India has been controling the governments of Nepal. Nepal stands helpless against the Indian Bullying tactics because of its geographic dependance on the Present day India. Unless we manage to take back our previously lost land around Darjeeling we will always remain hostage to the whims of the Indians government in Power.

Once we take back our land or the Indian government realiasing that the land truely belongs to Nepal gives it back then we will have Myanmar(Burma) to our east and Bangladesh to our south-east. Only then will Nepal be able to stand on its own feet. Truely Independent. Not as a sattelite state of a much larger Indian country.

This is not the first hand or first time news news of the enchroachment of the area of the river Bakrha by India. But India has started to construct a dam and embankment obstructing the river Bakraha (Luna), after Laxmanpur and Rasiwal Khurdalotan dams. The river is called Bakraha in Nepal and Luna in India.

I have mentioned the encroachment of this area in my book "Bounary of Nepal" page 272 (published in Aug. 2000) that one kilometer width strip of the Nepalese territory of the Luna (Bakraha) river area has been encroached by India. India had submitted a written claim, but the Nepalese side had denied this claim, as it is false claim. So this case was not settled by the joint technical teams. In the mean time India starte to construct a dam and embankment this year just in the beginning of the monsoon.

Nepal govt has no time to think on this issue, because they have to save their chairs for their personal benefit and mid-term election is just on their door. If there is something else from India, their position may be shaky. So " kanma tel halnu " is better than " jibro phatkarnu " for them. But the elites and the general Nepalese people, whether they are abroad or within the Nelalese territory, they must speak and expose the fact.

if this is indeed true, then the maobadi are clearly not as serious about imperialist expansions into nepal. breach the sucka w/o consulting indian gov't authorities. how can they protest something they deny knowing about in the first place?
