Does anyone know if there is any legal procedure a Nepali Child? I have friends and families who would like to adopt children from Nepal. Is it even possible? I know the government has banned adoption by a foreigner few years ago. I don't know if it is the same case with mixed couples and Nepalis.

Thanks for your help.

well LamjungKunchhaji, what i do know is that a nepali naturalized american citizen couple can adopt a child from nepal as long as the child is under 16. at least that's how it was some 10 yrs ago. the prcoess is long and arduous. Good luck

Many people I have heard have adopted from Bal Mandir and Paropakar. A few years ago there were some concerns about Paropakar because of the exorbitant fees they were charging. There are also provisions made byt eh government whereby peopel can adopt kids straight from parents... but I understand that it is more cumbersome.

Regardless, adoption is great, but I am personally conflicted about bideshis adopting kids from Nepal because there is no real monitoring of what happens to those kids. Also I wonder what kind of measures the government takes to screen potential parents.... In the US there have a system in place to ensure the child's safety and even then you hear horror stories...

Good luck to your family and friends who want to adopt... Hope they are good to the kid.

here's my 2 rups:

contact either (or both) the summit hotel or hotel greenwich village in kupondole, lalitpur. many (most?) foreigners adopting nepalis stay there, and i reckon someone on staff can point you in the right direction.

holt international in eugene, oregon, specializes in overseas adoptions, and they might point you in the right direction.

i never heard that foreign adoptions were banned in nepal, so it's news to me.

Thanks guys for your info. The people who are looking to adopt are very nice and I am sure they will provide a loving home for the adoptees. I just hope adoption becomes little more popular than currently is. I have realized how much of a problem it is to convince the families back home that there is no difference between adopted and biological children. I guess the centuries old tradition can't go away easily. My fear is that the children adopted by Nepali families get different treatment from their Nepali keens because they are adopted.

Here is something we can lobby for.
