Karamat se karamat

There was this chahalpahal going on at Shila’s house. After all tomorrow is the engagement day there. Whose? Well, Shila’s , of course, with an engineer dude. She was only 17 but was a high risk girl for her family. Why? because she was actively fallen in love with a guy, Bipin, who belonged to a lower cast and was struggling with his I.SC. course at Patan campus. Bipin was also 17 years young and was highly influenced by “love story” type of hindi movies.

Now it’s been a month since Bipin and Shila ran away with each other to an undisclosed location. It was no secret among his immediate confidante friends that they were hiding in one of Bipin’s friends’ house in Maitidevi but to everybody else that Maitidevi location was an “undisclosed” location. In our tole, friends churot ko dhuwa fukdai bhanthe “yaar tyo Shila ta bholi kuro chhinni aja rati nai Bipine sanga tap”. Sunil who was highly influenced by Shila’s beauty and was no secret admirer of her said, “Ma@#$%^#, kya chwak thi yaar…&*^% jasto rand poila gaye dekhi bhayankar boring bhai ra chha”.

Both parties tried their best to locate Bipin and Shila but without much success. Finally, Shila’s people started to say, “aba nahunu bhaisakyo….kata gaki ho…ghar aaye dekhi tyahi keta sanga bidhi purwak bihe gardina hunthiyo….yattika din bhai sakyo sabai lai thaha bhaisakinai halyo…”

“Bidhi purwak ko bihe” ko idea was getting good momentum. Shila’s family started to show extra nice gestures towards Bipin’s family. Bipin’s folks were also very cautious in wording their attack against Shila’s people. That aggressive condemnation of Shila’s family was being replaced by light weight and almost resigning criticism. Bipin and Shila came out of their self-imposed exile and went back to their respective family to finalise that “bidhi purwak ko bihe”.

After couple of days of his, Bipin’s, return to his house, he was met by Bhaskar, Shila’s brother and a police officer at putali sadak. Bhaskar was nice to Bipin and offered him ride on his motorbike to his house. Bipin hesitated. Bhaskar insisted. Bhaskar headed towards lainchowr with Bipin on his back seat. He didn’t understand why was Bhaskar heading towards lainchwor instead of going towards his house. Motor bike stopped at Sorha khutte police station. While getting off Bhaskar signaled Bipin to get off as well. Both went inside the “thana”. Bhaskar said, “I have an important thing to care of here. I was supposed to take care of this issue long ago but didn’t get the chance.” He ordered a haldar to bring a cup of tea for Bipin and looking at Bipin with a smile said, “ek-kai chhin hai”. He didn’t wait for Bipin’s response and went inside a room. He came out after a few minutes. Bipin was still enjoying his tea. Bhaskar said, “e, chiya sakeko chhaina? Thikai chha…kehi hatar chhaina….malai ek chhin bahira janu paryo…hai ta…” looking at the policemen there he said to Bipin these are my people and will take good care of you. Bhaskar left before Bipin could ask anything.

Sangai ko police le Bipin lai kathala ma samatera ek lat bajayo, as soon as Bhaskar left. Bipin panicked, “e…..e…ke gareko…”he wanted to explain his would be relation with Bhaskar but policemen didn’t care what our poor Bipin had to say. One of those “satya sewa surakshyanam” guys said, “hamilai sab ko yastai order chha” and with a might force he landed his fist on Bipin’s cheek. That “dhulai” went on for about an hour.

In our tole, nobody knew what happened to Bipin. He just disappeared. “bidhi purwak bihe” ko idea got lost in it’s process. Shila was sent to her grandparents in a remote village of Bhojpur in eastern Nepal. Shila’s family looked relaxed but Bipin’s family? Quite tensed. Bipin was still missing.

Finally, Bipin’s folk found out where Bipin was and after much “dauda dod” got him released from police custody after a thado adesh from home minister.

Bipin came back home more determined. He declared Shila is his and is gonna be with her no matter what. His friends found out where Shila was and Bipin left next evening to Bhojpur from bus park in a night bus listening “Papa kahate hai bada nam karega….”. He remembered the moments he and Shila had together while watching that movie. He smiled and looked outside from his bus window. A guy was trying hard to pierce a sign board saying “yaha pisab ferna sakhta manahi chha” with his pee force.

Ranjana hall was playing a hit movie, “Qyamat se Qyamat tak” those days.

Bipin was gone for Shila. Later halla came to Kathmandu that Shila ran away from one of her relatives’ house in Ithari where she was shifted to by her people (when they knew Bipin was heading towards Bhojpur) from Bhojpur with Bipin. Bipin and Shila’s story had emotion, thriller, halla, guf, suspense you name it in it.

They both disappeared again.

In one cold evening, looking at a group of young people who were Bipin’s friends and were busy playing langur-burja, Bipin’s mother said, “mero Bipin kasto sojho thiyo…yo “karamat se karmat” le khattam garyo.”

Side ko pasal bata ghankiraheko thiyo, “Papa kahate hai bada nam karega….from Qyamat se Qyamat tak.

(what was my role in this “karamat”? well, let’s not talk about it.)
