Landslide is a a long time and widespread problem facing by nepal. Every year, many peoples are killed, heavy loss of properties, obstructions in development works etc.What could be the main reasons of landslide; Deforestation ? over grazing? high population growth? weak geological condition? unscientific method of cultivation? Have enough efforts been made to prevent and control landslide and soil erosion problems in nepal? Of course, it is a major problem faced by nepal, but How about research of landslide problem in nepal?

150 feared missing in Khotang landslide

KATHMANDU, July 15 – Police now say they believe as many as 150 people are missing in a massive landslide that struck two villages in remote eastern district of Khotang although local representatives say about four dozen people were killed.
According to the Eastern Regional Police Office, Biratnagar, as many 150 people were missing and that at least 35 houses in the two villages had been destroyed by the landslide. The figures issued by the police is considerably higher than the ones provide by local representatives.
Search and rescue teams have also now reached the scene of the disaster and have begun work. Details were not available immediately.
Meanwhile, Secretary of Sungdel VDC Hom Nath Khanal said 42 people had been killed there. 19 bodies have been recovered so far and another four people were pulled out alive. Another two people are now known to have died in Dipsung VDC when the landslide struck a local school.
The final death toll is expected to increase. (rk)
